java problem after update 2012-006

Hi,

Today was update 2012-006 concerning java. It deinstalls java 6 from your mac. If you want java, you get it from java.com. This is a java 7 version.

but help: I want to go back!

there are some web-apps that do not work with this new java-version. Downgrading is not possible, becauase java 6 is only available through mac update itself. And if I want to install this again, it says that a newer version is already installed.

can anybody hellp me out?

Ok. From what it looks like on my end, the update removes the Apple java (which is exactly what that URL above says). So I just went back to the website I was trying to use and followed their links to download java. Reboot. And now there is a Java app under 'Other" in my System Preferences. All is well with the world. 🙂 thanks.

From the Java Preferences.app same as always in Java 6.

Wait... so, you still have a Java Preferences app after installing that update? By all accounts, including Apple's own support article, that app should have been removed. The article says specifically "This update also removes the Java Preferences application, which is no longer required to configure applet settings." (Of course, it doesn't fill in the blanks and tell us how to actually configure applet settings and whatnot.)

As frogbite says... I only install Java updates when I'm prompted to and then I hold my breath. (Actually install them on a clone first that is overwritten nightly) I depend on a particular Java applet and use it all day long. AFA my Mac is concerned " There are no new updates".

And that is just fine with me 😉

No, macjack has 1.6.0_35 if you look at the pic.

Indeed, didn't notice that before.

Well, for those who have problems as a result of this update, it may make sense to simply upgrade to Java 7:

Of course, some old Java code may work in Java 6 and not Java 7. However, keeping security concerns with something as holey as Java in mind, it's not a great idea to hold back, and that old Java code should probably be updated or replaced.
