java problem after update 2012-006

Hi,

Today was update 2012-006 concerning java. It deinstalls java 6 from your mac. If you want java, you get it from java.com. This is a java 7 version.

but help: I want to go back!

there are some web-apps that do not work with this new java-version. Downgrading is not possible, becauase java 6 is only available through mac update itself. And if I want to install this again, it says that a newer version is already installed.

can anybody hellp me out?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If you use Oracle E-Business Suite, you're gonna have a bad time. It only runs right on Java 6. Yes, that's right, the current version of the one Oracle product installed on the most computers is totally incompatible with Oracle's flagship ERP. No surprise given the complete idiocy which characterizes whatever passes for coding standards at Redwood Shores... In other news their fancy sailboat wrecked, thus giving some sailors a good example of what it's like to use any Oracle software anywhere.

Seriously, Java is just a buggy vector for cross-platform malware installs. Dump it if you can!

I am currently contracting at one of the World' largest Investment Banks, where the remote access tool for thousands employees and contractors working from home requires the Java 6 plugin; the performance with the Java 7 plugin rendering the app unusable. 😟

I just downloaded the above, and the performance is abysmal - the mouse skitters all over the desktop, the screen constantly refreshes. Is there any way I can get the Java 6 plugin (or any working Java 6 plugin) back?

Oracle provides instructions for this in their FAQ page, but they are incorrect (I just finished dropping them a line about it).

One user has done it successfully using the following modified instructions. Open the Terminal app (found in /Applications/Utilities/) then copy and paste the commands indicated after the "$ " prompt and hit return. When asked for your Password: type in your admin password (you will not see any typing) and hit return.

1. Uninstall Oracle Java 7 by deleting the plug-in file. From a Terminal window enter:

sudo rm -rf /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

2. Create a symlink using the following command, entered on a single line:

sudo ln -s /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/Resources/JavaPlugin2_NPAPI .plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

Good luck.

1st, remove version 7: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml

Uninstall Oracle Java 7

Following the steps listed will uninstall Oracle Java 7 from your system.

Note: To uninstall Java 7, you must have Administrator privileges.

  1. Click on the Finder icon located in your dock
  2. Click on Applications tab on the sidebar
  3. In the Search box enter JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
  4. This will find the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin file
  5. Right click on JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and select Move to Trash

2nd, download and install the last version of 6 from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421

Bad idea. This will leave you with Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_29 which will expose you to drive-by infection by Flashback and a few other minor bits of malware, plus it has many other vulnerabilities that could be exploited in the future.

Using the modification to Oracle's method above will eliminate the known threat and give you a much safer Java environment with 1.6.0_37.
