Working with iMovie 5 File in iMovie 6

I'm in the middle of a iMovie HD project file in version 5 on my PowerBook 12" and am running out of disk space and the processor is killing me. I'm going to purchase a new Mac Book Pro to finish up the project.

Will the iM5 project work in iM6? Or will I need to instal iM5 onto my new MBP?

Thanks

Andrew

Andrew,

Your project should work in iMovie HD 6 assuming that your not using any third party plugins or codecs that aren't compatible with the new version.

So, just in case, make sure you keep a backup of your original though. In your case I guess that means just keep the old PowerBook near by.

Ordinarily I don't recommend upgrading in the middle of a project unless you have a compelling reason to do so. Which it sounds like you do.

One possibility if you do have third party codecs installed is to export your file to a full quality quicktime file and then import that file into a new iMovie 6 project.

I find that flattening the file in this manner is the quickest way to move a file from one version of iMovie to another when I do not want to concern myself with what 3rd party codecs were used when the project was created.

Just a thought.
