Share Trading program Iress not working on osx 10.8.2

I did the Mountain Lion update this morning and now my share trading program Iress is not working. The upgrade updated java from 6 to 7 and apparently Iress will not accept java 7. I have been trying all day to roll back osx 10.8.2 to java 6 however there is no download available on the java 6 website for Apple computers. Can anybody assist in rolling back java 7 to java 6 in osx 10.8.2? Thanks,

The update is still Java 6. Some previous versions are still on the Apple Support downloads page, but I don't know whether they'll install over a later version. I suggest you restore from the last backup you made before updating. Better yet, ask the application developer to fix his product so that you don't have to downgrade to a Java version with known security holes.

Thanks for the reply Linc. You were correct the older versions of java dont install over a later version of the osx.

I had already complained to Iress sharetrading program about them using old tech.

Today they supplied a beta version which I can use which uses java7. Not fully functional yet but at least it works!

By the way I think the update was to java 7. The dowloaded file has the name jre-7u9-macosx-x64.dmg.

Now Apple has turned off Java completely 1st Feb 2013 Webiress, my sharetrading platform, won't work at all! There goes my livelihood! Apple please turn Java back on. I am semi retired and use trading to survive. I understand there are other traders who are suffering the same problem. Any solutions? Does running Windows on iMac permit Java to work? Any assistance gratefully accepted.

Apple hasn't turned off Java completely, per se, but they have effectively blocked the Java applet from running in Safari. If you are feeling your technical oats you could always try this solution posted to ars technica:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/01/for-second-time-in-a-month-apple-blacklists -java-web-plug-in/

Read the article and all of the comments before doing anything. Proceed at your own risk. I have not performed this 'fix' and make no promises as to the usefulness or correctness of any part of it.

It is interesting to note that this 'blacklisting' of the Java applet in Safari has apparently broken some of Apple's own web sites--such as certain editing features (i.e. adding a link to a word or phrase) of these forums--possibly. They worked fine before this silent blacklisting and do not work at all now.

The problem is as much with webIress. Their system works much better with Java 6 than the beta version 7 I was trialling. I had already rolled back to Java 6.

Thanks for the article and while I feel confident to unblock using the Terminal commands I might try an alternate browser first like google chrome or Firefox if they work on iMac. Would unblocking allow all the nasty viruses to enter or does it just allow Java to work?

I think an alternative browser is worth a try. Sadly I will miss Safari. Firefox I find a bit dowdy.

Hi Crh24,

Ok I tried downloading Google Chrome and WebIress still won't work. I tried the Terminal command by Smack-Fu Master on the Arstechnical site:

sudo mkdir /System/Library/Launchdaemons/Disabled

sudo mv /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.xprotectupdater.plist /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/Disabled/com.apple.xprotectupdater.plist

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete:JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum" /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta. plist

....and it didnt work either. (I copied and pasted the command into Terminal after signing in. Was that correct?)

I appear to be stuffed.
