I am not sure what is the problem, but uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes has no affect on the issue.

Hello all,

Anyway after uninstalling, reinstalling (the proper Apple suggested way) and trying every suggestion i could find on the forums (took hours all this btw!) I unwittingly resolved the ath.exe issue it as follows:

I opened itunes with no phone installed I went to preference and reset cache and sync history. Still no joy so I once again uninstalled itunes and installed the third party software starting with Copy I allowed that to installl the driver for the iOS devices automatically. My 4s then synced flawlessly and I was finally able to add some music that I had wanted to do.

Encouraged by the flawaless performance of third party program I decided once agin to reinstall itunes and this time it worked! I suspect this may have something to do wiht the way that this program instlled the official apple drivers? Or maybe my previous alterations in itunes preferences had reset something? ( I never have had the wifi sync ticked so that was not the issue in my case thoguh I have read that has been the issue for several others)

All I know is that it was clearly something to do with ath.exe and applemobileservices program.

This is the second major issue I have had with my 4s on 6.1.2 with latest itunes. My other was the data devouring/iCloud bug that totally fracked up a works prioject involving 100 ipads that I had bought (see my other posts)

Hey folks,

Not sure if this is a permanent fix, but here's what I did..

Start your Task Manager -> go to the Applications Tab -> click on "New Task" -> A pop-up window will open; click on "Browse". At this point you'll want to look for the ATH.exe file, which should be located in the following:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\ATH.exe"

Once you find the ATH.exe file, double click it. You'll be directed back to the pop-up window; simply click ok. A small little black window will pop up very briefly, which is what we want. You're all done. ATH.exe is now working again & your devices should be able to read/sync with your iTunes library.

If ATH.exe stops working again, just redo the same steps.

Happy trails 🙂

I have WIN7 and get this all the time. I fix it by rebooting PC from time to tim. When it does happen my itunes does not recognize phone so I just ignore it until I want itunes to do its thing and I reboot the PC and it seems fine until it happens again. Call me cynical but I think it is just Apple's way of trying to get you to ditch your PC and buy a MAC
