Hello,

I also am seeing very similar and frustrating behavior.

Here is my setup:

iMac 2011 model. iPhoto 9.4.2 (upgraded today to see if it will fix the issue, nothing). Aperture 3.4.2. shared iPhoto library with Aperture.

Symptoms:

- Open Aperture, all events (projects) appear with key photo on the cover, and when you hover over each project, see all photos within. double click on a project, can see all photos.

- Close Aperture

- Open iPhoto, go to Library > Events. all events appear with key photo on the cover, hover over each project, see all photos within. double click on an event, a green empty background with 'no photos' written top right corner. I'm in normal screen (not full screen mode).

Also, if you click on Library > Photos, you can see all the photos.

After reading other posts I felt that this issue seems to be tied to the fact that somehow an Aperture search filter is locked in place and iPhoto seems to think that you have a search filter turned on.

To demonstrate this, I went into one of those phantom empty events and hit command+F and clicked to search by 'Rating', didn't pick any rating, but now all the photos in that empty event appear. Even more, only one iPhoto event seems to show its photos, and only a subset of the photos in that event are visible (stared ones). That event was an event that was imported via iPhoto, then opened in Aperture and starred recently.

I went back to Aperture and removed any filters I had, made sure that the top right search bar always shows "Showing All" on most events (I have thousands of events, and don't have time to look through all!!). Opened iPhoto, problem still there.

This is certainly some sort of a recent annoying bug. Why would this happen all of a sudden without a warning?

One thing I'll add is that last night when I first noticed this issue I closed iPhoto and re-opened a couple of times and one time it said that the database is corrupted and repaired it (first time I've seen this error). Still that did not solve the problem.

I'm a huge fan of iPhoto and Aperture, especially now that you can share a single library. I also have a great scheme for backups where I relocate masters to my Drobo and leave only 2 year worth of photos on iMac + use time machine to backup only that. And I upload to Flickr all my top events for offsite backup.

but recently with this problem and other problems where emails I sent directly from iPhoto are only visible on google Chrome only (parents don't see baby's photos in IE!!! some wired issue with iPhoto email templates, had to switch to email photos via Mail), and also poor facial recognition in iPhoto (Picasa is light years ahead!). Apple, this is starting to get frustrating. I lead a very busy life and I count on you to keep my photos organized 😟 can someone please help, I don't have time to research further or call Apple.

wow. this plot just thickened. I just recalled that very recently I had a Photostream shared album that I deleted photos from. That photostream shared album has photos that come from different events. It seems that these photos are the only photos that appear when in the events view. So if you click on other events you see no photos, except events where photos from that Photostream album are. when you click on those events you see only those photos that are in that Photostream album (instead of seeing all the photos in the event). Again, you can see all photos in any event by searching with a blank filter as I described above. This leads me to a different theory all together. I guess the search filter/Aperture link might be a dead-end. this could be related to some strange Photostream album 'photo delete' bug.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

User/Home(User uploaded file)/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home(User uploaded file)/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

For me the culprit turned out to be in fact an Aperture filter. It seems that any filter applied to the most recent project shortcut in the Aperture sidebar is automatically applied to all the events in iPhoto when they are accessed though the events viewer.

In my case I had applied the "Flag:Yes" filter to the most recent project shortcut in Aperture and then later unflagged all photos, which left all my events in iPhoto seem empty.

Anders Puck Nielsen, you just saved iPhoto for me. This was exactly what solved my issue. I went into Aperture and removed a search filter I had under the Recent > Project. Closed Aperture, opened iPhoto and bingo, all my photos within events now show up. Can't thank you enough, this was such a major issue. Someone in Apple should address this in the next Aperture/iPhoto release. Is there a quick and painless way to report a bug and a fix to Apple?

You won't be risking anything if you make a backup copy of your library first. Here's what I recommend to users: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1 (for iPhoto 9)

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
