Photos and Events are two views of the same material, so if they are in one they are in the other. Can you describe exactly what you see on the iPhoto Window? Also, incclude the version of iPhoto that you have.
Terence,
The version is 9.4.1. There are boxes with palm trees with the titles of my events, and the message is "no photos 0 kb" at the top right. Before last night I had a huge number of events as I have been scanning old photos in.
Thanks,

Scanning old photos in? Exactly what is your workflow
LN
I use image capture, then scan in a set of photos which are individually recognized. I edit the photo information, updating the date of the original picture if I have it, and also the comments, faces. I crop or rotate as necessary. Then I move the picture into an event that I have created, really an organizational grouping, that has pictures of many dates within it. I have a lot of pictures! and lots more to scan. I have been moving things a lot from event to event.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I have exactly the same problem. Events which were full of photos yesterday are now showing as empty - a graphic of a palm tree is all that shows. With the number "0".
The photos are, evidently, still in "photos" but the EVENTS ARE EMPTY. The iPhoto organizational system is all out of whack and nothing...NOTHING has changed.
What's going on?
I do not have time to sit here and reorganize and recreate events when iPhoto decides to go crazy.
Again - what's going on? I do not like mysteries.
No mystery - your library is corrupt - the solution is to rebuild as described just above your post
LN
But why has this occurred on two separate, unlinked computers?
If it were one corrupt library, that would be one thing.
Two unrelated libraries on two computers - that's another matter altogether.
You have this issue on 2 computers at the same time?
Patsy,
how do you maintain the separate libraries on two different computers?
Do they share the same set of images?
Do keep them in sync, and how do you do that?
Do both libraries on both machines use the same version of iPhoto?
Did your events vanish on both machines at the same time?
Did iPhoto crash?
What was the last operation you did on both libraries?
Without knowing how you work with two libraries it is hard to tell, what may be causing this on two comuputers.

Léonie
Yes: in iPhoto on a 4-yr. old iMac and in iPhoto on a 2-mo. old Macbook Air, there are certain events which now appear to be empty.
Each computer has its own iPhoto library - that's normal, right?
What's not normal is for some events to suddenly appear to be empty - just the palm tree graphic - although the photos themeslves are evidently somewhere on iPhoto (just not showing up in Events).
I'd insert a screen shot here but I can't seem to figure out how to do that.
For how to take a screenshot see: http://guides.macrumors.com/Taking_Screenshots_in_Mac_OS_X
for example: "Command-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop"
To post it here, click the camera icon in the toolbar of the window of your post.
Good Luck.
Terence,
I chose repair database, But the same empty palm tree boxes were still there. I restarted the computer and then tried to restart iPhoto but it won't restart, just does the rotate thing in the finder window .
Now I'm worried!

Given your experience, Cooadams, I'm not going to risk anything. I'm giving Apple a call when I have a nice long empty afternoon for a tech talk. This kind of thing should not happen. 😠
Then go on to option 2
