Why Multiple Kernel "issues" w/G4 iMac/Tiger?

Folks:

Lately have had a run of KPs in my ten year old +- G4 iMac . . . so we know it's "old" but overall when it's running well, it's fine. I ran the Apple Hardware test and that shows "OK" . . . I have SmartReporter and that shows fine. I booted up in ext HD and ran DU to Repair Disk, and I ran Onyx as well . . . . Today, I was trying to see if it was related to the browser, lately Ten4Fox, so I switched back to Camino but got the same "we don't support your browser" and KP there as well . . . . Then I tried to not use the internet at all and things were going well for awhile, but then got another KP that way. The computer has stopped generating "Crash Reports" to send to Apple and now just gives the kernel panic in a CLI note in black bars with white text that drops down over the desktop; multiple times the "grey" screen with the "You need to restart" happened, we aren't wasting time doing that now . . . the mouse and screen freezes and the CLI kernel trap info shows up. BTW, I also had done a PRAM reset, and then I saw BDAqua's post here about doing it three times, which I did the other day and it seemed like the problem was fixed . . . until today with 3 of them. Seems like it can happen right on revive from sleep or after running the computer for awhile. Any thoughts? I've been told already, "It's time for a new computer" and I'm reconciled to that in the near-long term as the "answer" . . . just wondering if I can get some insight into troubleshooting my dear old G4 friend and keep it going for awhile longer??? Can anybody hep me? Final note, I've got the int HD partitioned and running Xu/Lu 12.0.4, the crash problem started there and that's not new, but then continued over into the OSX side. Today, I was logged into Xu/Lu and did not have any KP while there . . . but did again back in OSX . . . . Is it "soft" or "hard" ware issue? I can't tell . . . . Many thanks for any insights.

Hey buddy:

Seems like you are the only guy who thinks highly of AJ on the forum???? : - )) The details are described here and on the other thread; but, short version-- in root account Terminal GUI I can run "applejack auto" and the task list will show up, but of course with warning "not in single user" . . . so it is installed, but not working. When booted up in single user in 10.6.8 . . . essentially "nothing happens" as some other poster noted on the forum . . . it doesn't matter if I type "applejack" or "applejack auto shutdown" or "applejack man" . . . in 10.6.8 they all bring, "no such item" or something like that. In GUI Terminal running "applejack man" does show the AJ short manual page.

I filed a bug report on SF . . . . The only neutral command I know how to do is "exit" in single user, and that command worked . . . any other commands to run in single user to test it out? But, more importantly, any slam dunks to get AJ working in 10.6.8?

My understanding is that AJ relies upon single user mode invoking /var/root/.profile which contains the AJ message and an alias pointing to its script. This works well in Tiger and Leopard but it appears that one or more Snow Leopard users get neither the message nor the alias redirect despite /var/root/.profile being modified by AJ and the AJ's script being correctly installed.

@NH:

Thanks for flipping back over here, appreciate the details . . . it's good to know "why" a problem might be happening . . . the "fix" would also be cool. Basically I'm posting here to repeat the thanks for the "Period" app, but, as I have no phone/internet at home I have not been able to install/try it.

On the other thread about ethernet and the crimes of dual-boot systems . . . I did fix that issue on the Linux side before the phone/DSL went out; but everything was fine in OSX, I never lost connectivity in OSX. His problem seems to be in OSX, but he seems to be over-complicating something??? reinstall whole system to fix internet???? I get that he is doing something a bit tricky with using satellite, but still seems like OSX is mostly "plug-n-play" . . . Linux side can be more painful, I can't remember what I did to get it working, but it is a recurring issue in the PPC Linux realm as many threads are about wifi and ethernet issues on Linux forums . . . .

In 10.6, see if you have this...

/private/var/root/Library/Scripts/applejack.sh

Likely you won't have Permissions to see it... but you can change that right?

Just ran it in 10.6, (though it isn't needed asmuch)...

Sorry for delay, no phone/internet at home and struggling to get by with parttime work . . . . : - 0 Anyway, I believe I did run that, as suggested by Mr Hillyer on the other thread . . . and it seems to show some of what you posted, but only in the root GUI Terminal . . . in single user that returns . . . "'applejack' not found" . . . words to that effect . . . . I'll try again maybe later when I'm logging out of my regular account . . . . Seems like everybody doesn't think AJ is too necessary in 10.6, but, nonetheless having it be available in a clutch would be good, yes?

You were asked if you could see it.

Select Go to Folder on Go menu and paste /private/var/root/Library/Scripts - then hit Go.

Can you see the applejack.sh file?

I suspect you can because you have invoked it from the Terminal - something you were not asked to do.

@NH: : - )))) Sorry, I've always had a problem responding to commands . . . I get so confused . . . . OK, I went to the root account and pasted "/private/var/root/Library/Scripts" . . . into Go to Folder . . . and got "The folder not found"

I don't know what a root account is ??

With a normal admin account can you find the file by starting with either of the following in Go to Folder:

/private

/var

@NH & BDAq:

OK, when I just started with /private and then "drilled down" to the following folders in the path, I did have to "change the permissions" to "read only" for "everyone" be able to open the folders . . . and then, as both of you predicted, yes, the applejack.sh file is the only file in the Scripts folder . . . so it is there . . . but I think we sort of knew that? Do you want me to edit something in that file? I didn't try to open the .sh file . . . .

oops - I forgot that you would not be able to see the contents of the root folder without logging in as the root user or using the Terminal with:

sudo ls -l /private/var/root/Library/Scripts

@NH: Well, this looks similar to what you had posted on page 6 of this thread, but this time the "-l" was different . . . so yes, in admin account Terminal I ran the above suggested command . . . and did get

"

total 144

-rwx------ 1 root wheel 69953 Jul 10 2010 applejack.sh"

@BDAqua:

??? It looks like you are running 10.6.5 . . . would there be any difference between 6.5 and the fact that I'm running 10.6.8? Also didn't do the 10.6.8 supplemental update, as it wasn't part of a Combo update as the general wisdom here on the list suggested?? Any reason to do the supplemental update? All this in terms of getting AJ to be able to run . . . needed or not . . . .
