LaCie DVD burner total waste of money

I recently purchased a LaCie D2 DVD burner so I wouldn't wear out the internal DVD burner in my Dual G5, but it has been a total waste of time and money.

DVD Studio Pro can neither see nor burn to this drive.

Pathetic!!!!

I have an internal LaCie and the drivers from LaCie were all I needed.

If the latest driver from LaCie doesn't help,
try PatchBurn.

http://www.patchburn.de/

PatchBurn is a tool to patch existing CD/DVD-drivers or to generate and
install new device profiles (under Mac-OS 10.3.x and later)
It allows many, otherwise unsupported burners to be used directly with
Mac-OS X, iTunes and DiscBurner.

My D2 works fine for me. Once though, I rebuilt my machine and forgot to re-install the LaCie burn support driver and OS X couldn't "see" the burner.

Just be sure, as others have suggested, that you've actually installed the LaCie provided drivers.

As an aside, why did you post a complaint, rather than a message asking for help? Did you check with LaCie? Was your "pathetic" directed at LaCie, or DSP?

Firstly, thanks for the feedback. I'm looking into all suggestions. I do have all the latest drivers and software updates, so the system can see the drive and media no problem, it's integrating it into the OS and apps which is a problem.

I posted the topic because I am seeing no built-in support for external burners within either DVD SP or Mac OS X, even after several months of updates. It's really not practical to use the built-in burner for production work. I have to run an app called Ardiem just to get the tray to open and close.

When it comes time to burn a DVD there should be a way of selecting which burner to use from within DVD SP, either lock in a preference or be given an option every time.

I should also be able to chain several burners together and do batches, or at least tell the app how many copies I need to burn and have it eject a finished disk and ask for another one until the job is done.

None of these essential features are present.

Hmmm.

In the System Profiler, under Disc Burning, you should see the following...

IDE-DVD DVDRW8651 (this is the drive in my D2)

Under the Burn Support column, it should show "Yes (Vendor Supported)" and a Firmware Revision of LT25. I assume you're also connecting it via FireWire.

Newer D2s may have an SH-S162L drive, with different firmware, but in either case the Burn Support column should show "Yes (Vendor Supported)".

Which version of LaCie DiscRecording Support do you have installed? The current version (April 4, 2006) is 1.23, available at:

My D2 does work and is selectable in all OS X applications, so there has to be something missing in your setup.

As for the missing features in DSP, that's between you and Apple. 😉

I do have the newer D2, with the SH-S162L drive, and no firmware updates currently available for it.

Everything, DSP, OS X etc is at the very latest rev.

Just for the heck of it I did download the most recent Disk Recording Support software and re-installed it, and now when I click Burn from within DSP the LaCie tray pops out - yaay - but alas the Eject button on the keyboard continues to control the internal DVD.

Something I need to take up with Apple as per another reply.

Thanks again for all the feedback. Very imformative. Now, if only I could go and change the topic title.......

New Discussions Responses

The new system for discussions asks that you take the time to mark any posts that have aided you with the User uploaded file tag and the post that provided your answer with the User uploaded filetag. This not only gives points to the posters, but points anyone searching for answers to similar problems to the proper posts. When you mark a post with the User uploaded file tag, it will also mark the thread as Answered. If you receive the solution or answer to your question outside of the thread, then, and only then, at the top of the thread, mark the thread as Answered. This will mark the thread as Answered without marking an individual post as User uploaded file.

If we use the forums properly they will work well...

I'm marking this one as Unanswered because I launched DSP to burn some DVD's tonight and the internal burner tray opens instead of the external tray, and also blank media inserted into the external is not recognized by DSP, instead showing up in the Finder as a disk ready to be burned to.

This is exactly the same kind of issue I was dealing with before I took the advice of several other members and re-installed the LaCies drivers, which restored the kind of functionality I would expect from DSP only until the app was quit.

Upon launching again it's back to its old crippled self.

Needless to say I do appreciate help from those of you who are willing and able to give it, but throwing out no-brainer advice like "Did you download and install the drivers from Lacie's web site?" just to get brownie points clutters up the discussion forums IMHO.

Mr Nedrow, on the other hand, gave thoughtful and inciteful feedback and advice, and he got my vote what I thought my question had been answered. However, the problem came back upon re-launching the app.

Very frustrating to say the least.

I'll be submitting yet another lngthy bug report to Apple 😟

Bummer. Just for the sake of documentation for the thread, could you post the pertinent system and application info/versions.

If I see anything applicable elsewhere, I post a reply here.

As an aside, be sure to also send a message to LaCie noting the problem with the drive not being recognized in DSP. You'll probably initially get a canned response ("Did you install the drivers?"), but subsequent replies from them have been helpful.
