connection time out error

I am continually receiving a wifi "connection timeout" error when attempting to rejoin a wifi network. All google suggestions not working. I am not computer tech savy.

Searching for clear, contemporary instructions that will work for my macbook air.

Kind regards - Richard

What confused me was you said after ten seconds then turn on your computer again. As soon as I release the four buttons the computer starts automatically.

I've tried it several times and it seems to fix the problem but the fix doesn't last. Right now, for example, I'm suddenly disconnected and I'm waiting for the computer to find the connection again to send this reply. It's finally found it.

Right.

Well all I can tell you is that before the Apple tech told me what I was about to do (holding down all 4 buttons), he said that while I'm holding the buttons down if the computer turns on, then he was going to have to try something else.

Since it worked for me, we didn't go any further - I'm sorry.

My computer did not turn back on when I released the 4 keys. Once I released the 4 keys, absolutely nothing happened until I pressed the power button. Then the computer turned on and found the WiFi with no further problems.

Sorry this didn't seem to be a good solution for you.

Good luck!

Have any of you tried the Linc Davies Solution (as in previous page)? Does it work? I use a Asus router connected to my HP Windows 7 PC as well... and the timeout blows out the HP connection as well... returns back only after restarting both the router and the HP!!! As for the Macbook, well - its like a ghost, returns back sometimes, doesnt otherwise. Is the Linc Davies solution foolproof? Bless him if it is, because otherwise, I will keep missing Steve Jobs (more than I did before). The 4 button formula appears to be quite a vodoo by the way (or is it not)?

Hi everyone,

I'm in a public library where there's LOADS of people with wireless devices, so I'm wondering if that may be the cause of my "connection timeout" when I try to connect to the wifi... SO annoying, especially since people next to me, on Windows XP! are constantly on Facebook!

I think I've tried everything that is mentionned here (rebooting while holding 4 keys, deleting saved network and join it again...)

Please help!

Have you tried this... it worked for me once in the last few days... have put it on trial / you should try it too... Richard, for Marmaduke's Macbook Air was the first to acknowledge its success...

For the benefit of all other Apple user's experiencing this frustrating wifi setup issue, I am replying to Linc Davis's suggestion/ advice to me on 25 & 26/10/12:-

It has now been a month of me trialling the suggestion:

"Open the Network preference pane in System Preferences and make sure the WI-Fi connection is at the top of the list on the left. If it isn't, unlock the preference pane, if necessary, and drag Wi-Fi to the top. Then click Apply and test.

...In Network, under System Preferences, the preference pane is already not locked but won't allow the wifi to drag from the second top to the top...

Select Set Service Order from the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the connection list..."

So far, this has worked. Thank you Linc and to all who responded.

hey guys,

i have a macbook air mid 2011 with same issue.

after spending long hours on it, i want to share my solution.

first here is my pb and so far what i did to fix it unsuccessfully:

get timeout connection for the past 2 days. sometimes it would connect to it but the pages wouldn't load.but strangely, it will connect to my hotspost shared connection from iphone5 AND iphone4...just not with my modem...

PS: my modem works fine with my phones, ipads, laptops and imac, just not my macbook air

i tried:

- forget the network

- delete the network history from keychain (in disk utility)

- reset the modem ( netgear with optus plan)

- change the channel in the wireless settings of the modem

- smc reset

- pram reset

- shut down the laptop for 2 days and try again

- sleep mode for 2 days and try again

- boot on safe mode

- hold option and boot from the recovery partition then tried internet...still no success.

i spent usless time on the phone with apple and finally called NETGEAR.

we tried couple of things without success until the 2 last manipulations here they are:

- go to your modem settings (http://....), enter your ID and pswd to access the settings.

then go to the wireless settings. i changed my security options from

"WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" to "WEP".

then, on the same page, go down to "Encryption WEP key" ( or whatever is the closest depending on your modem provider) and on the first line "Key 1" enter a NUMERICAL password then click down "Apply".

Go on top,Still on the same page, and change the name of your wireless connection name ( SSID) to whatever you want and click down "Apply".

LAST STEP ( MAKE SURE YOU APPLIED ALL CHANGES MADE IN THE MODEM SETTINGS)

- go to disk utility=>keychain access and fine the line with your old network name ( should have the "A" icon and say " airport network password".once highlighted, delete it.

then click on the wifi icon (top of the screen) and click "open network preferences"=>"Advanced"=>"Wifi" and delete any trace of preferred networks.

NOW try to connect to your wifi with new name and new numerical pswd and that should work ( at least worked for me)

So far i tried ALL the tips and nothing worked.Optus and Netgear blamed my macbook air until i finally did these steps.

the explanation seems to be a conflict in the settings that blocked the macbook from accessing the modem.

Please try and let me know how it goes.

cheers

This post hasn't had any activity in a year. But I had to respond to say I FIGURED IT OUT GUYS!! I was having the same "connection timed out" error message when trying to connect my MacBook to my wifi/tether from my cell's hot spot. Well it took me forever but this is how I fixed it..

1.Go to the advance settings in my phone and click on advanced settings.. allowed devices.. and added the MAC address from my laptop.

2. Go to my network preference wifi symbol on my explorer bar (I think its called.. its the symbol you click when signing into a network)

3. Clicked Create a Network. Now when you do this it will show you a CHANNEL number. Mine was 11.

4. Go back to your network settings in your phone, go to the advance network settings. And change the Channel to match your computer. My phone was set to AUTO but I specifically changed it to 11.

After I did this I instantly got all bars on my wifi signal and my internet has been working PERFECT. Actually, its been working faster in my opinion. I hope this helps some of you, or at least those trying to connect from a cell phone.
