connection time out error

I am continually receiving a wifi "connection timeout" error when attempting to rejoin a wifi network. All google suggestions not working. I am not computer tech savy.

Searching for clear, contemporary instructions that will work for my macbook air.

Kind regards - Richard

I'm having the same problem, except from a diferent factor.

I just recently bought a macbook air with the intentions of using my phones 4g connection as a wifi network. It worked perfectly fine when I opened the box, but I was required to do an update in order for some applications to run. Once I upgraded to 10.7.5 and my hotspot never connects anymore.

The same hotspot works perfectly fine on my iPad, and I have reset all settings on the phone and still have the same problem =/

The connection timeout error still happens when the macbook air is within a strong wireless frequency range.

What I've noticed that appears to reset the error preventing wireless connection, is if I drive to a shopping centre with wifi and connect up, wait for the error to happen again, then drive to another shopping centre and connect up to a different wifi, then drive home and connect up to the home wifi - it seems to reset the macbook air's wifi connections and stop the error. But having to drive around to find wifi spots in not very user-friendly.

I thought there maybe a link to an apple upgrade I haven't downloaded yet.

The timeout error occurs with which ever wifi network is being used.

Example situation:

If I am using wifi to check emails, close the notebook/ shut down, and then attempt to go back online again for banking, the timeout error message occurs and prevents me from using the same wifi network again.

Current remedy:

If I am in an area with 2 free wifi networks, I can swap from one to the other - like resetting. But if I'm at an airport, at home or in a remote area that only has one free wifi network, the error message arises and I can't go online.

In Network, under System Preferences, the preference pane is already not locked but won't allow the wifi to drag from the second top to the top; wifi is already on and bluetooth is already off.

My tentative remedy update:

Alas, it seems that network connection timeout "resetting" is temperamental - I went from the public library to home, and the the wifi timeout error came back/ wouldn't reset from the previous time, so sorry.

I"m sure there is an Apple wifi update I haven't captured within the last 12 months.

Kind regards

For the benefit of all other Apple user's experiencing this frustrating wifi setup issue, I am replying to Linc Davis's suggestion/ advice to me on 25 & 26/10/12:-

It has now been a month of me trialling the suggestion:

"Open the Network preference pane in System Preferences and make sure the WI-Fi connection is at the top of the list on the left. If it isn't, unlock the preference pane, if necessary, and drag Wi-Fi to the top. Then click Apply and test.

...In Network, under System Preferences, the preference pane is already not locked but won't allow the wifi to drag from the second top to the top...

Select Set Service Order from the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the connection list..."

So far, this has worked. Thank you Linc and to all who responded.

Kind regards - Richard, for Marmaduke's Macbook Air

Ok - I just got off the phone with Apple Care and the tech fixed the timeout issue.

What you need to do is shut your computer down completely.

Once it is turned off

- hold all 4 of the buttons for 10 seconds (while computer is off):

Control button

Option button

Command button

Power button

Hold all 4 at the same time for a count of 10 seconds then release. You should not notice anything happen -

Now turn your computer back on and it should be able to attach to your WiFi

Good luck!
