mail notifications not working correctly on iPhone 5

On my new iPhone 5 I have mail notifications set up as on in the notification center, alert style is banners, badge app icon is on and show preview is on, view in lock screen is off. It is set up the same way as when I had an iPhone 4. However, when I get a new email and the phone's screen is not on, the next time I turn it on I will not get the banner alert, all I see is the badge icon. This is kind of annoying as I would like to see the banner to know who the email is from before going into the mail app.

The notifications for mail on my iPad running iOS 6 just like my iPhone 5 are set up the same way and work correctly.

Why would they not be working correctly on my iPhone 5?

I am on a 4 and am having this problem. I use yahoo mail and gmail. I was using the gmail app, but I like the built in mail app much better, so I set up gmail as an exchange server through the mail app. Ever since then, I don't get consistent banners on new emails for the yahoo account. I get the badge, but the banners are more often than not, not there. I have the gmail up with sound and alert, and it always works. I think it's just an issue with having multiple accounts, because it also doesn't work when set up as a Gmail account instead of Exchange.

Gmail is my default account, so maybe why it works and yahoo doesn't.

Hmm. After getting sick of this, I decided to reload the phone from scratch. No backups, complete build like a new iPhone with 6.1.

Still, the notifications are not working as they should. The banners are still not displaying. Any other thoughts from anyone?

I'm beginning to wonder if the phone may need to be replaced, but it seems extreme for what should just be a minor software glitch.

This started happening to me as soon as I added an email address as a VIP. I selected it to popup as a notification that wouldn't go away via the old system because I didn't want to miss anything from them since they where a recruiter from a new company that I had applied to. I have not turned the notification off from them to check to see if this was a reason or not though to see if it will fix the situation because I don't want to miss the next email from them.

I haven't read all the way through this thread, and I know it's quite old, but I was having a similar issue. What solved it for me was when I discovered that notifications need to be turned on for each individual email account.

Settings > Notifications > Mail. Then select the email account and select which notification type you want and display in lock screen. Once again, apologies if this isn't what you're talking about!
