Volume Control grayed out

I am running GarageBand 2 on a Mac G5. The volume control for the real instruments is grayed out. The correct audio inputs are selected in the system preferences. What am I missing. I cannot even replicate this on my other macs!

I've tried deleting the preferneces for GarageBand, reinstalling GarageBand.
Can someone shed light on this?

G5, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Catherine, I muddled my answer, but I tried the driver selection procedure myself again and it works.

You might try reconnecting your I/O with the computer up. It should tell you there is a device missing and would you like to select a new audio driver.

Then you can reset your preferences in Audio Midi Setup, Sound Preferences, and GB preferences>Audio/Midi>Audio Input.

Reconnecting an I/O or a different I/O then the one it's set to should toggle the alert on and take you through selecting a new audio driver.
