Slow connection through Linksys router

I have an iMac G5 iSight and a G4 Mac Mini (both running 10.4.5) that share an internet connection via a cable modem and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. The iMac is connected by an ethernet cable to the router and the Mini connects to the router through Airport. Both computers can connect to the internet fine but the connection speed on both is only around 1Mbps. If I bypass the Linksys and connect the iMac directly to the cable modem, the connection speed is around 3Mbps.

I have tried resetting everything and checked the transmission rate and max transmission unit settings on the Linksys but cannot get a faster connection. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I just wanted to give you an update on my woes with the MacBook Pro and the WRT54G router. As you know, the time it takes to begin loading a page was up to 7 seconds on my high speed connection -- on the Windows XP laptop it was only 1 second and on the MacBook Pro with Windows XP it was also only 1 second. Out of frustration, I took my old Belkin wireless router and pluged it into one of the ports of the WRT54G. When I connected to it from the MacBook Pro (in OS X) it worked like a charm. The page load times were down to 1 second as if I were on a Windows XP machine. The reason I need to keep the WRT54G is that I also use a 'repeater' system between the Linksys router and 2 Linksys Access Points. Anyhow, I didn't think that two wireless routers could work together but somehow it seems to be working. Thanks for all your help.

Yes, I'm afraid that Linksys router also does not work well with the OSX either. I have had great luck with the Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router. As a matter of fact, I picked it up at Best Buy for $10 after rebate! I've also tried a generic CompUSA wireless router with great success. Many people are having the exact same touble with the Linksys router. Try one of these other ones and you should have better luck. Good Luck!

Changing the security on my router and iMac to WPA2 instead of WPA increased my speed dramatically.

I have the same problem with my mac mini running OSX10.4.3 -- very slow to load pages -- but, although I normally go through a Linksys router, the problem remains when I connect directly to the cable modem using an ethernet connection. A old PC on the same system is 10 times as fast. I tried deleting the networkPreferences .plist. That seemed to help once, but hasn't since.

I have a MacBookPro AND a PowerBook G4 and a FritzBox 7160 Router. On the G4 I get good DSL speed, on the MacBookPro I suffered both by Ethernet cable and WLAN from slow speed down to occasionally bits per second !

After backup I cleaned all log files using Xupport ( http://www.xupport.ch/ ) and got a tremendous speed increase up to 100 KB/sec on the MacBookPro. Occasional "hickups" ( short speed drops ) happen, but work is productive now. Hope it holds.

When I first connected my MacBook to my home network I was getting ridiculously slow pings from the other pc's. Webpages took minutes to load up. I read on another forum (can't remember where) to:

Disable IPv6 in network preferences.

This helped a lot and network is now usable, but still very slow compared to my windows machines. Perhaps this gives someone else some ideas.

If your circumstances are anything like mine, then this will help.

Are you...
Behind a router?
On Comcast cable internet?

It could be that the DNS settings in your System Preferences 'Network' setting are incorrect. Use your router to find DNS1 and DNS2 (usually under 'Status'), then copy and paste these numbers in the Network preference where it says DNS Settings.

I found this in an archived post. Did the trick for me.
