Itunes suddenly freezes when playing videos.

I am running iTunes v. 10.7.0.21 along with Quicktime V. 7.7.2 (1680.56) on a Windows 7 Pro machine. About a week ago I noticed that iTunes will freeze up anytime I try to play a video, forcing me to quit the program using the Task Manager. The same videos play fine in Quicktime. I have tried the following:

  • Completely uninstalling iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour, etc. and reinstalling per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923. No effect.
  • Launching iTunes in safe mode per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430. This worked. I could play the videos in safe mode, but when I attempted to follow the rest of the directions, I could find not plug-ins to disable. There are none in the listed folders.

Currently, I am using iTunes to locate my videos, right-clicking and selecting "Show in windows explorer" and then opening them in Quicktime. Not an ideal solution att all!

Prior to last week, everything was working normally, so I am at a loss as to what changed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What format are you playing or did itunes already convert them? If you playing any format from your computer I would use VLC, its here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html. It really plays anything. MKV being the most popular now. Basically quicktime is flawed since their last update and I know the new Itunes ***** but it might not be a bad idea to update. Hope it helps.

The issue is primarily with video podcasts, most of which are either MOV or MP4, although I have yet to find any format that will play in iTunes. As it stands now I watch them using Quicktime, but it's inconvenient not being able to watch them in iTunes, the program which I use for downloading them and syncing them to my iPhone. I have VLC, but again, that doesn't solve the ploblem of having to use multiple programs for multiple functions. I can't pinpoint this as an issue specific to the latest version of iTunes as the problem started prior to the "upgrade".

The fact that I can play them in safe-mode is even more perplexing, since I am not running any plug-ins/add-ons. This leads me to believe that some other conflicting application is causing the issue, but I can't figure out which.
