Aperture 3 does not work well with Mac OS 10.8.2. The code base is getting really old to work with the newer versions of the Mac OS. Is Aperture 4 coming anytime soon? I would rather not switch to Adobe Lightroom 4 because I love the integration with iCloud, but the database corruption and subsequent and crashes are happening too frequently.
Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
Aperture 3.4.2 is working quite well for me in OS X 10.8.2. One thing I've found is that it's faster and seems more stable when you have plenty of RAM (enough that Aperture can use 1-2 GB without forcing everything else to swap into virtual memory).
I haven't had any major issues with it since I upgraded my older MacBook Pro to 6 GB of RAM. On my current machine (MacBook Air, mid 2012, 8 GB RAM) it runs like a dream.
I don't know if this helps you troubleshoot it, but I thought it was at least worth mentioning I'm not having any problems here. My library is about 115 GB, and I also use several third party plugins and Photoshop CS6 with it, so I feel like I'm putting it through its paces too.
Nothing fancy on my install, but it keeps crashing. Particularly with importing photos from my camera. Aperture 3.4.2 and OS 10.8.2.
Brand new macbook pro 15in and it is bug city. Might have to switch back to lightroom
You should upgrade to 3.4.3 before making a drastic move (and spend more money)
Dont update to 3.4.3! i cant even open Aperture anymore. It just freezes on startup. Like Mollivan i tried re-installing both OSX ML aswel as Aperture.
This used to be such a good program and now its all trouble and no ease of use or confort.
C'mon, Apple, get it together!
I am still running 3.2.4.
3.3.x is horrible. Video glitches on dual monitors, super slow performance and I HATE the all grey interface.
Selecting projects doesn't work well. If you need to go to a project on the library in 3.3 you need to click it, get info and then choose Go To Project... ***? It is a simple click on 3.2.4. 😠
Selecting a new smart album (Shift-command-L) in 3.2.4 will create a smart album under the project that is selected, on 3.3, it creates a new "album" which is not attached to the partent project... BS!
Besides iPhoto integration? Hello consumer? This is a PRO App. Why ruin it with integration to something nobody cares aobut. Might as well just use iPhoto then...
Mountain Lion also ruined Aperture, even 3.2. I have video glitches and performance issues. Not to mention 10.8 is really the buggiest and worst update ever. I wish I could go back to 10.7 but everything is already upgraded on Mail and other Apps. 😢
I am seriously considering swtiching after being a faithful user since V1.0 in 2005.
I have too many projects and time invested into Aperture, so Apple should start to take pointers from Adobe and start making this software work better and faster and release a version 4 asap!
Apple keeps fogetting Professionals. Like No Mac Pro for 3 years... Still my 2010 Mac Pro runs circles around the newest iMacs but I really want a new Screaming Fast Machine for 2013.

I'm thinking that Apple is trying to drive off the last remaining users so that nobody will be around to care when they pull the plug on Aperture.

I've fortunately / unfortunately switched to LR4... I waited, Apple. My family has migrated as well. That's 5 lost business opportunities. Apart from this, Apple's MO of trying to be secretive surely has a downside... we aren't asking to know what's "around" the corner... at least tell us what's down the street. Wake up, Apple.
I swiched to Aperture 3 when they dropped the price as it was much cheaper then the Lightroom upgrade. Also I did like the idea to have a closer integration with OS X and iOS. I mean it was a nice tool at that time but with years and 2 OS X releases going by it has not become any better and it is certainly ages behind the current LR.
Just a few things that LR does perfectly but Aperture doesn't:
- Keystone correction, not possible at all I have to use PSE to do it (which ***** at this also by the way) and I lose the non destructuve editing as I continue with a stupid JPG format
- Horizon correction: In LR (since LR 2!!!) you can just draw a line and boom. With Aperture very annoying and imprecise freehand rotation.
- ND Gradient not available in Aperture 😟
I could add plenty more. So Apple either you pop out version 4 really really soon or I am another LR4 user. Working with Aperture 3 any longer is even more excruciating then the migration mess to LR.
