No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Just do what I will be doing: don't buy a new iMac! 👿

With no Firewire you won't be able to connect your video camera either!

Two points here. If you purchased your Mac with an integral DVD that doesn't work, then if it's still under warranty, simply take it back. If it isn't under warranty then the cost of repairing would be more than perhaps you're willing to pay. My suggestion is that you purchase a remote dvd drive such as:

Samsung Slim Portable External DVD Writer USB (8x DVD / 24x CD) White SE-208DB £20 from Amazon.

I use several Mac Mini's for my work and actually use the Liteon DVD read/write drive that simply plugs into a USB point. No issues with it whatsoever.

I suggest you consider this option. Good luck.

Thank you Bernie. To be quite honest this will probably be my last post on this forum, I've found over the past two and a half years of looking for answers to several problems with my iMac that educated answers from knowledgeable people on here to be few and far between.
I've had so many comments deleted by the Apple moderators that I feel like I'm living in communist state where freedom of expression has been outlawed.

But you actually are in a Forum who's terms you agreed to, now of course having given your word you are unable to keep it.

Just one more troll to keep zB company.

I couldn't care less if Apple's new machines have DVD/CD drives fitted or not. It' irrelevent.
The fact that my machine was bought with one and has never worked properly is the point I'm making.

I actually still need and use a DVD's, and the fact that Apple has decided to not include a DVD drive because of design is a totally nonsensical idea.
Choosing design over functionality is never going to be a sound marketing stratagy.

You know I heard the same story when Apple dropped the floppy drive. Everyone of the gloom & doom sayers predicted dire consequences because of that decision. Shortly there after all of the other computer vendors followed Apple. The gloom & doom sayers packed up their tents and disappeared into the desert. Now that Apple is doing the same thing to optical drives, they have returned with their sad tales of woe.

Personally I see the decision as a great one. Only a very small percentage of the users truly need an optical drive. So why should everyone have to pay the penalty for one. Let the small percentage get an external optical drive just as they did when the floppy drives was no longer included as standard.

I was about to upgrade to the latest Mac Pro but will definitely review the decision to stay with Mac's. I am not a "power" user and do not have an indepth understanding of the need for adding a firewire so that the other gadget will work with it... for me it defeats the purpose of a Mac. Simple, elegant and reliable.

Like other people who have commented, I work in a world where people want dvds and CDs of the work I create for them.

Up until this purchase, i did not mind the 3X premium that a Mac Pro could cost versus a PC. But to now have to add external drives, and such defeats the purchase and inflates the premium.

Please tell me why I should reconsider. I am a boomer and use my laptop as a means to and end. My objective is to find the machine that best accomplishes that task.
