No DVD drive in new iMac ???

Two points here. If you purchased your Mac with an integral DVD that doesn't work, then if it's still under warranty, simply take it back. If it isn't under warranty then the cost of repairing would be more than perhaps you're willing to pay. My suggestion is that you purchase a remote dvd drive such as:

Samsung Slim Portable External DVD Writer USB (8x DVD / 24x CD) White SE-208DB £20 from Amazon.

I use several Mac Mini's for my work and actually use the Liteon DVD read/write drive that simply plugs into a USB point. No issues with it whatsoever.

I suggest you consider this option. Good luck.

You know I heard the same story when Apple dropped the floppy drive. Everyone of the gloom & doom sayers predicted dire consequences because of that decision. Shortly there after all of the other computer vendors followed Apple. The gloom & doom sayers packed up their tents and disappeared into the desert. Now that Apple is doing the same thing to optical drives, they have returned with their sad tales of woe.

Personally I see the decision as a great one. Only a very small percentage of the users truly need an optical drive. So why should everyone have to pay the penalty for one. Let the small percentage get an external optical drive just as they did when the floppy drives was no longer included as standard.

I was about to upgrade to the latest Mac Pro but will definitely review the decision to stay with Mac's. I am not a "power" user and do not have an indepth understanding of the need for adding a firewire so that the other gadget will work with it... for me it defeats the purpose of a Mac. Simple, elegant and reliable.

Like other people who have commented, I work in a world where people want dvds and CDs of the work I create for them.

Up until this purchase, i did not mind the 3X premium that a Mac Pro could cost versus a PC. But to now have to add external drives, and such defeats the purchase and inflates the premium.

Please tell me why I should reconsider. I am a boomer and use my laptop as a means to and end. My objective is to find the machine that best accomplishes that task.

Only a small percentage use the optical drive? You have any hard data to back that up? I highly doubt that.

If you don't feel that Apple can offer you anything, I am not going to try and convince you otherwise. All I know is that my purposes I will not consider anything else.

Answer the question. I am very curious as to why such a bold statement as only a small percentage use optical drives was made without a little proof.

Problem is that there isn't much choice. Would you really want to cross the line and go down the Windows route. No. Lie down in a darkened room for a few hours and accept that Apple may be leading the way forward. DVDs or not!

I provide my clients with what they ask for. In addition I have an extensive photolibrary that is on dvds which I like.

Then buy a machine with a DVD drive, most likely that will be a Windows machine.
