IBooks 3 crashes on start up on iPad 1

I updated to iBooks 3 last night on my iPad 1. iBooks now crashes whenever I try to start it. Is anyone else having this issue and can anyone offer a solution? Also, is there any way to revert to a previous version of an app?

I am having exactly the same problem as Ricard -- can't read books on my 1st gen iPad at all any more with iBooks 3,which keeps crashing as soon as I open a book (or try to).

Unfortuantely, I had already emptied the trash and no longer have iBooks 2.2, and I see no way to get it again. I'm so mad about this.

I went to the Apple store for help -- they figured out that when the edit box started spinning (which it always did), it didn't stop, and that made iBooks crash. We thought I could read if I turned off wifi, but it still crashes.

If v.3 is incompatible wth the orignal iPad, which is what the Apple guy determined, don't let us download it, and give us a way to restore v. 2!

Reading is what I do on my iPad, so I'm really mad. Apple needs to solve this now and not make us figure out a way around it.

I also have an Ipad 2 with 6.0 and I do not have memory issues as says I have available 6.3GB and I can no longer open my Ibooks after having updated. This is a massive issue as I use the PDF portion to store all of my clinical studies and presentations for our medical products on the Ibooks. I would really appreciate it if anyone knows if there is a solution to this and or if Apple is aware.

While I did have 2.2 on my iPad 1 before I synced it to iTunes, which had v3 waiting on it to "update" my iPad the next time I synced, I used the procedure I described above and came out fine. I think the issue has to do with having a lot of PDF data involved, and there is something in the update which chokes on the volume. The iPad doesn't have a lot of system memory and I think that's where the choke point is.

If you install iBooks 3 by itself, without any content, it looks like it will work. Then sync the content. YMMV.

I hope Rickster_G4 solution works for you. Basically, install iBooks 3 by itself and then let iBooks 3 rebuild the ebooks in Books folder afterwards.

If not, you might have a copy of iBooks 2.1.1.ipa in a previous backup on a computer. If oyu have them, check ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications.

I will probably try myself that solution but not before putting the heavier PDFs in GoodReader, but this iPad has low memory, anyway, and I am interested in any reports of slowness with working iBooks 3.

Just got back from the Apple Store and my appointment with the Genius Bar. They deleted iBooks 3.0 and did a backup to iCloud. My backup was 22-days old. A reset was then done and iBooks reinstalled. I was then instructed to log on and the RESTORE was started. iBooks would now open BUT all my PDFs are gone. All the other APPs that I have downloaded also need to continue downloading before I can test to see if it works when I move my PDFs back. Still debating if it will be all at once or one / few at a time.

All of the RESTORE is still incomplete as I type this. I have two magazines in DropBox and available to DocsToGo. I just opened one Mag in DocsToGo and told it to open in iBooks. It opened in iBooks 3.0 and when I closed it, 5 of my OLD PDFs are back. Maybe I will still have all my PDFs available once I let the iPad finish restoring all the files.

More to come.

So, why are you guys so happy about a workaround that limits what you can do with iBooks? Why shouldn't we expect to get an app that works on our "early adopter" ipad 1's. Once again, we are "The Forgotten". I don't want to just read small regular ebooks, or small PDFs, I want to be able to read anything in my library, just like before. I travel a lot and carry all my reading fir pleasure books and professional reading with me for the plane and for reference.

The only "fix" for me was to uninstall iBooks 3 and reinstall 3.0. (iPad original running 5.1.1). Get your act together, Apple.

Thank you for the update, RV6flyer. Would you care to elaborate?

From your previous posts, I understand that you tried Rickster_G4 solution. If I understood that correctly: sync properly (so that all the Books are in iTunes), then uninstall iBooks 3 from iPad, then download again iBooks 3 in iTunes, then sync iPad to iTunes leaving Books out (uncheck Books in iTunes Books tab), then restart iPad, then start iBooks 3 (without any books), finally sync everything (that is with Books included).

When you start iBooks 3 now, it does not crash at start up and you can see all the books. Have you tried opening some and it doesn't crash and all is I used to be, not noticeably slower or any other odd behaviour?

Just to be sure, are you doing this with an iPad1?

I would like to try that, but I have installed the previous version, and I am still slightly afraid of losing things - I have many and I have been through this once. thanks in advance.

I've been using 5.1.1 for months with iBooks and no issues with crashing with pdf's. Last night, I sent a pdf to myself to have on my ipad....it crashed. (so I know which file it is). I deleted it. Still crashes. I can't go back to iBooks 2.2 because I too had cleared out my trash bin. I did the other suggestions throughout this post and iBooks still crashes. It crashes before I add any books back to it....there are no files in it yet the app crashes within seconds of trying to start it. My iPad is 1st gen...not even 2 years old yet...memory isn't an issue, its a 64 GB... seems crazy that for something that costs $800 one has to 'trade it in' after 2 years......

I've wasted my morning trying to correct this. I have a lesson in a half hour, and need the book I've been reading for my lesson which was in iBooks.

I've always been a supporter for Apple and stood up to the naysayers who complain their products are too expensive. I always felt it was worth it because they seemed to take a different path than Microsoft by making sure their software and OS worked properly before putting it out to the public. Now it seems they are falling to the same stance as other companies. Hurry up, get it out there to compete and make money, if there are problems oh well. And I find it very discouraging that there are so many of us with this issure and there is not one Apple rep responding.

I had an issue with Photoshop this week. Went to their site, posted my issue, and had 2 employees of their respond back to help figure out what the problem was.

For as much as we pay for Apple products, that is the least Apple can do to show, we their consumers, they appreciate our business and loyalty.
