I warn you of a potentially serious problem and your rebuttal is: since Mac's crash for reasons other than installing Rosetta on them, then others should not consider my advice? ... and then you go on to suggest that I prove you wrong?...

Not likely!

Here is what IS going to happen:

1. People who read my current posts will be warned to NOT install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion. If they do so, they do so AT THEIR OWN RISK! This is expecially true since there are two known methods that work WITHOUT THE INSTALLATION OF ROSETTA.

2. You should contact those people for whom you installed Rosetta into their Lion computers and WARN THEM that they should be making daily backups of their computer and to be on the alert for future problems, ESPECIALLY once they have updated their version of Lion or upgraded to Mt. Lion! Anything less is computer malpractice!

Removing Rosetta from a Lion Mac at a later date, does not do anything for the other files that may have been corrupted by the presence of Rosetta. Only a backup, complete wipe, reinstallation of Lion or Mountain Lion and then a restore of ONLY data files and programs from their install discs will GUARANTEE no future problems caused by the earlier presence of Rosetta!

I asked for better documentation. Maybe I should have asked for ANY documentation. I took the trouble to go to the link you provided and searched for the comment you referenced, nothing about problems with installing Rosetta.

I try and scan most if not all the posts in this forum and I don't remember seeing any posts that installing rosetta caused problems.

I have an open mind, but need more information than what you've provided so far. There's a lot of misinformation on the internet. Over the years (and I do mean years) I have been corrected on some of my posts and when the correction has been supported with references that make sense, I've admitted my ignorance. I always try and qualify my posts, if I'm not sure of my facts with "as far as I know" or it's equivalent.

Michael, what exactly do you mean by "any documentation?" You want me to find those recent posts where I have seen conjucture that earlier installation of Rosetta may be causing their current problems?

Do you cross-index every post you read on this forum? I don't! I just store them in my memory and WHEN I have to, I use the search function (in BLUE at the top right of this page) to attempt to, on occasion, find one or two of them as needed.

Since you are equally as competent as doing a search as I am, if it is that important to you, please do so.

But I find it hard to believe that you could justify the continuation of your advice to anyone in the future to install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion...

May 5, 2013 7:11 PM in response to MlchaelLAX

just spent 10 minutes searching thru posts doing a search here for "problems with rosetta." Nothing seems relevant except other posts of yours without any references. I've done sorts both by date and relevance.

When someone challenges something I've said here, I've spent the time to find the appropriate references and post them.

Enuf said. Good night.

Maybe in the time you spend trying to find posts that, at the end of the day, will prove nothing (since you can't prove a negative!), I am out there researching new problems and solutions that hopefully will help my future posts...

More simply, Michael, please answer this question: If you can install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion and get a PowerPC installer app to work, why doesn't that installation of Rosetta work for any of the hundreds of other PowerPC apps (and indeed they ALL fail when launched to run in Lion or Mt. Lion with Rosetta installed)?

There is no "uninstaller for Rosetta" although an accomplished Mac user can use Unix at the Root Level to remove it.

If so, has anyone with the problems you describe done this and did their problems go away?

Did you read this in my 6:49pm post?

Still waiting for an answer to my question to you, above.

For my sake, please, extend your life a little bit longer and point out to me where in this post, I am "once again... presenting things as facts..."

Probably the posts you are looking for will be located at this link:

https://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?resultTypes=&dateRange=all&peopleEnabl ed=true&q=crashes+Final+Cut+Studio+2&containerType=&container=&containerName=&us ername=&rankBy=date&numResults=15

BUT: you are NOT going to find a smoking gun! There is no post that says, in so many words:

1. I installed Rosetta into my Lion Mac so I could install Final Cut Studio 2.

2. Lately my Mac's crashing because I installed Rosetta into Lion!

I have drawn a "conclusion" based upon the anecodal evidence that I have been reading lately, based upon the following:

• It is always DANGEROUS to tamper with OS X at the root level in ways NOT approved by Apple. Doing so should be avoided by the "every day, common" Mac user! One possible KNOWN result of such tampering is the corruption of other system files. That is why Apple sometimes does NOT recommend using Migration Assistant when corruption of files on the source computer is suspected or known.

• Installing Rosetta from OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard into OS X 10.7 Lion is tampering with the operating system in a way that is not approved by Apple.

• There has been no reason suggested as to why installing Rosetta in Lion would work for the Installer app in Final Cut Studio 2, if such installer app was written in PowerPC, yet NEVER EVER work on ANY other PowerPC app.

• I have read recent posts by users of Final Cut Studio or Logic Pro 8 (another so-called PowerPC installer app) where Lion was updated past 10.7.3 to 10.7.5 or even upgraded to Mt. Lion indicating that they are having as yet unexplained "crashes" on their Macs.

That is enough for me to resurrect Paul Revere to send out the clarion call:

ROSETTA IS COMING!

ROSETTA IS COMING!

There is no such thing as a PowerPC installer because the installation package is essentially just a script that gets launched by the OS X installer app installed locally on your system, which is optimized for whatever architecture you happen to be running.

However, it is possible for an installer to have PowerPC interface plugins or to launch a PowerPC helper application. The part in the installation process where it asks you to enter your registration information is the culprit here.

Since entering the registration during installation isn't important because you can enter it the first time you launch an application, I would recommend not trying to use the installer and just installing through Pacifist.

But I think the more pressing question is how stable FCP 6 will be on an operating system it is not designed for. I have not tried FCP 6 on 10.7 / 10.8 but I have tried FCP 7 and it was very unstable with all versions prior to 7.0.3.

Many people who have installed FCS2 into Lion have report their success in its continued use, on this and many other forums.

Mountain Lion: I have not done an anecdotal survey of the forums to see how the respective users feel about its operation on 10.8. That is because I am a "Rosetta guy" and I do not use Final Cut Pro in my daily activities.

TIme will tell...

excuse me. You do a pretty good job of inferring that Rosetta will corrupt files. You do say may but if it doesn't corrupt files, what possible reason is there to worry about it if you uninstall it.

After my resent accident the emergency room doctor told me that I may have internal bleeding, inferring that the accident causes internal bleeding. But if the accident did not cause internal bleeding, why should I worry about the damage caused by internal bleeding?

Notice that the E.R. doc said "may!"

Why can't i install final cut studio in mountain lion?
