kindle fire HD does not appear on desktop

Hello-

I am running 10.8.2, just bought a new Kinde Fire HD but can't get it to appear on my MacBook Pro desktop anywhere-

after many tries and a NEW Kindle! Any suggestions out there?

Thanks so much!

HI TobySFan,

I guess I'm confused about what you mean that your Kindle never shows as a "device"? Unless I'm sorely mistaken, the only devices that would show up on your Mac would be i-devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.). Since Kindle is an Amazon device, it has no native support on the Mac. The Mac does run the software that Amazon provides for Kindle users to be able to access their Kindle books on thier i-devices and Macs, but beyond that, there is no other suppor that I know of.

Can you explain exactly what you are looking for when you say your "device" does not appear?

Two other thoughts:

1. Go back into the Apps program and see if the Kindle app is showing as "Installed". If it isn't - re-install it.

2. If it is showing as installed, restart your MAC to see if it now appears correctly with all content on your Launchpad.

Good Luck - and please let me know how it all turns out!

Thanks,

GB

TobySFan,

Have you ever launched the Android File Transfer app? The Amazon/Android help says you need to launch it manually the first time. (Apparently, it installs a stub of some sort to get itself launch subsequently.)

gale from maine, the app in question is not installed through the Mac App Store. It is downloaded directly from an Android support site.

Thanks so much again for all the responses!

Gail from Maine: after viewing your last response, I was able to solve the problem!

The kindle was supposed to appear on the desktop, (from everything I read) after being plugged into the computer,

as an "kindle icon"- similar to how a flash drive apears on a desktop. I realized this must the case for the

older versions and apparently not for my new one. This brings me to markwmsn:

Thanks also for your repsonses! I realized that the Android File Transfer box that appears must have replaced

the kindle icon from earlier versions. I was able to then move files into the appropriate folders through that

file transfer page. I kept expecting the kindle to show up on my desktop--it never did--and now I know

why. I still can't "eject it safely" after transfering files since it doesn't show up as device on my desktop--

but I do not get an error message either.

Your last few responses put it together for me and now it works- finally!

I think I had to "re-train" my "Apple" brain!

Thanks so much again!

Wow TobySFFn,

Thanks for sticking with this with me. I have a feeling that I will be referring back to this discussion at Christmastime, as I got my husband a new Kindle Fire, and we will probably have to go through the same exercise. I have such an old Kindle (one of the originals, I think), that I never had anything but the Kindle app on all my devices, and since I only use if for reading, had just not run into anything more sophisticated than opening the app and then my book.....

Again, I will bookmark this discussion because I'm fairly certain I'm going to need it!

Thanks again!!!

Cheers,

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your advice - I wanted to do the same thing so I downloaded the Android File Transfer app as suggested and put some of my films into it whilst it was open on my Macbook desktop. All good so far. But now I can't find the films on the Kindle. Where do they go? Or have I missed a step where I am supposed to then move the films out of the Android File Transfer app and into the Kindle?? Not sure what to do next.

And yes, I have connected it properly, and switched it off and on again etc etc.

All advice gratefully received.

I am having this problem too. I have done all the things tried above and talked to both Kindle and ipad support on the phone. no one can solve this probelm for me. I am so frustrated. I have an iPad but bought a Kindle for my son thinking I could put his music on his Kindle. Nope. Not gonna happen in time for Christmas I guess. Sometime I really hate all this proprietary crap.

Hi Karenfromwy and TobySFan,

You probably already know that the reason they don't appear in Personal Videos is because you simply can't convert the Films or vidoes that you got from Apple (through Itunes) into Android. More proprietary crap. I have tried it with various convertors and none of them work, I still just get empty icons on the Kindle. So I bought the DVD I wanted to put on the Kindle from Amazon (yep, it was a bit bizarre) and got a friend at work to convert it on his Android laptop and download it to the Kindle. What a crazy system. Why can't I just get all of this from the Amazon app store and download it straight away??

But there is light at the end of the tunnel - Tesco now let you use their reward vouchers to buy iPads, so we're saving them as fast as possible so we can get one and ditch the Kindle. Hooray.

Hello J H5~

I'm sorry for all your hassle! I also convert my DVDs to a Quicktime movie, put them on my desktop and then use the Smart Converter App to convert to the mp4 format for the Kindle. It is a lot of work to get there but you get used to doing it that way if the movie you really want is not available at the Amazon Instant Video store.

Wishing you the best of luck:)
