kindle fire HD does not appear on desktop

Hello-

I am running 10.8.2, just bought a new Kinde Fire HD but can't get it to appear on my MacBook Pro desktop anywhere-

after many tries and a NEW Kindle! Any suggestions out there?

I have checked:

Hard drives, external disks, cds, dvd's, and ipods

Spring-loaded folders and windows: delay-medium.

Have you downloaded the Kindle app from the app store?

Amazon's help pages say you have to install an app named Android File Transfer on the Mac to do USB transfers. Have you installed it?

I'm confused. I donwloaded the Kindle app from the app store. Is there some other app that I am simply not familiar with?
