Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

I just got my 2012 Mac Mini yesterday (mid range model) and have already noticed three instances where the video would blink out for about a half second, and then come right back. This happend twice already when I'm connected to a Apple 23 inch LCD monitor via the included HDMI-DVI adapter and once when I'm connected via HDMI to my Samsung LCD TV. Anyone else noticing this happening on their Mac Minis? Thanks.

I think this problem is rather random.

Scenario 1:

Plugged HDMI --> DVI to Right monitor.

Plugged DisplayPort --> DVI to Left monitor.

Played YouTube and major blanking / blinking on the Left monitor.

Scenario 2:

Plugged HDMI --> DVI to Left monitor.

Plugged DisplayPort --> DVI to Right monitor.

I had to go into System Preferences --> Displays --> Arrangements (arrange the monitors and menu bar accordingly).

Played YouTube and nothing.

Frustrating.

I still have the issue with Yosemite (all versions since first beta) on a Mac Mini 2011. All RAM-resets did not work. All fw updates are applied.

Its with HDMI - both direct Mac Mini HDMI - Receiver and Thunderbolt-HDMI adapter.

Since a couple of days, its getting worse with inverse colors from time to time. It happens mainly, when a video is playing.

I have the same problem as originally described by several posters. The display gets grey screen "static" or "fuzz" just like you'd see on TV when you disconnect the antenna cable. It's one of the Brand NEW Mac mini's that I custom ordered as follows:

It's two 27" samsung displays. They are both connected via DVI cables, but one users the Apple hdmi->dvi pigail, and the other the minidisplay->dvi.

I notice it every time I walk back up to it after I've been away for a while, and the display has gone to sleep. I come back and the screens are all fuzz. I do things like toggle the caps-lock key, and hit the escape key, and soon or later the picture snaps into place, and I can log in and proceed normally until Ieave again and have to do it over.

This mac mini replace just a prior generation one, setup exactly the same way, and it, nor any of my other prior gen mac mini's ever displayed anything like this problem.

ocmacdude, thanks to have taken time to list your specs.

I had my mobo replaced free of charge at my local Apple Store, including RAM & CPU if they told me the truth.

My late 2012 model of i5 Mac mini (2.5GHz) could not operate with a new pair of 4GB RAM units, but it already had random screen blackouts and snow fuzz with the original pair of 2GB each. Worse, HDMI would not work on reboot after a system crash. The login screen would burst out of the bl...ack after a 15 mn (if lucky) to over an 1h of "no input signal" state.

As a matter of fact i still have the blackouts and i’ ve seen the multicolor snow effect once in a while.

So i suspected my new mobo to suffer from the same trouble than the original one.

I was worried about buying some RAM to end up returning it again, but if you could buff up to 16GB it seems that the problems are not related.

I suggest you to be kind with those keys, i use to just snap my finger close to the HDMI port, or clap my hands staring at the screen, and it’s very effective 😉

Psychomagic IS good, if it does not produce collateral damage.

I have a mac mini (late 2012) with two monitors. When I had the Asus PB278 connected via mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter at 2560x1440 and the Samsung E1920 connected via HDMI to DVI at 1366x768, the Asus would periodically go black for a second. Sometimes a few times a day, sometimes a few times an hour. It was annoying. I read through the message boards and tried different cables, reset PRAM/NVRAM/SMC, reinstalled OS X, called Apple support, etc. Finally, I connected the Asus via HDMI, which I was determined not to do since it drops the max resolution to 1080P and connected the Samsung via mini DP to DVI. It fixed the problem. Even though I'm not getting the maximum resolution from the Asus anymore, the 1080P actually looks better. The menus and icons are easier to read, photos and movies seem just as sharp, and the detail I needed for stock charts is there. Best of all, no more random blanking out of the screen.

Mac mini 2012 and Mac mini 2014 here. Running Windows 8.1 in bootcamp (different bootcamp software versions). Three different monitors, Dell U2913Wm, Dell U2713H and Samsung 24E650DW. All having issues. Initially fine with mini-displayport to displayport connection, then black screen for a second or two on both machines, then fine with HDMI-HDMI on 2014 model before getting pretty bad.(this time both Windows and OS X) Now the 2012 works fine with an active mini-displayport to DVI adapter and the Samsung monitor and the 2014 Mac mini works fine with a mini-displayport to HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the monitor.

I wonder if this an aging problem of the integrated GPU - years ago I had an IBM Thinkpad T61p (laptop) and people who used the laptop for gaming invariably suffered early failure of the video due to the heat developed (and that was not even excessive).

Did not buy for any of my previous 5 Mac mini's a warranty extension but I will do so for the 2014 Mac mini (2.8 Ghz with PCIe SSD). Since I rely on these machines for my (time critical) work I will give serious thought towards if I want to replace these with the next Mac mini model - I though initially the 2012 had just a bit of issues but having these back in the 2014 model gives me pause. It will be a pity having to move away from the Mac mini since I like the ease of restoring, the quietness and the compactness (ease of travel).
