Q: Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

Sorry to jump in on this thread.  I literally got a quote for a new MM 2012 yesterday but I am now reluctant after reading this thread.  On the other hand I've just read the article posted by woodmeister50 and the article quotes "if you use another input on your monitor instead of HDMI you will be okay until its fixed".  Does this mean still using the HDMI to DVI D adapter?  If so I should be okay as DVI is all I use.

No, based on my experience, it is unlikely that HDMI to DVI will avoid the problem. I had the problem using the supplied Apple adapter

The work-around that I am using is with a TB to DVI adapter which I got Apple to give me.

Thanks for reply, much appreciated.  I think what I will do when I decide to order is demand a TB to DVI to keep me going while Intel and apple sort the problem out.  I mean is the flickering really bad, as in can stop you working or just now and again?

Just now and again. In my experience it happened within an hour or so of start-up and then I could go for hours with no problem. When the screen blacks-out I could hardly say "Oh my goodness" or something similar before it came back-up.

With the 'snow', again just occasional but annoying enough to want it fixed, the snow was over the Apple light grey background. I found that turning my monitor off and back on took me back to where I was with no need to sign in again.

In my experience one can work with it, it's just very annoying.

Be aware that not everybody in Apple at a local level is aware of the problem, likewise many users won't be either if they haven't used the HDMI port.

Today I got a black screen again with the TB>DVI (MDP>DVI) adapter. This time a series of about five one second long black screen, and a few seconds normal between, and then back to fully normal again without any logic reason.

This was the second black screen-issue for me with the MDP>DVI adapter in a couple of days, after running the same adapter for about three weeks without any problem.

Well thank you very much for the complete overview of the graphics problem, I at least know now to avoid the HDMI for now, and use a TB connection to my DVI Samsung monitor.  Talking of the "snow", I am using a MBP late 09 with a NEET mini display to dvi, and when both screens go to sleep then are woken back up, my secondary samsung screen just displays "snow" or "digital noise".  If you simpley wait about 10 seconds, it sorts itself out and corrects itself.  Does this coincide with what you mentioned?

Yes as mentioned the blackouts were quite short, annoying but workable.

As I was running extended desktop what I did in the end was have the application open on the MDP to DVI connected monitor and all the other adjustment windows etc open on the HDMI to DVI screen. That way the blackouts were then only ever in the corner of my eye as I was mainly looking at the MDP/DVI screen.

My replacement, mine was one Apple decided to 'capture', is due to arrive Monday so don't know what to expect. I was e-mailed by someone quite high up in Apple who has taken over my case to let me know when my replacement was due and they want me to e-mail them if I have any problems with the replacement.

Well, I am a bit gutted as I was all excited about finally jumping ship from my MP early 08 (which iv'e alrealy put on eBay) to the new MM 2012 with the 2.6GHz i7.  I'm a bit reluctant to purchase one unless the one they send has been rectified like yours hopefully.

I don't think I left it long-enough to sort itself out, on balance NO!

I've seen what is being described as snow (noise) four or five times now. Every time but one it was full screen snow, no picture at all, just snow.

But on one occasion the snow was overlayed over the desktop, I could still see everything through the snow.

It would be useful if others who have seen snow could say if they saw just snow or translucent snow and desktop/windows etc.

Seeing noise overlayed on the correct image is something I find very worrying, it 'feels' much more like a hardware fault than something that can be fixed in software/firmware.

Just snow in my case. Usually within a few minutes of logging in.

I haven't seen the desktop through snow. Just Apple corporate grey (as with boot-up) and with snow on top.

Problem persists with the latest (new) 10.8.2 update.  I updated last night, and just now backing everything up to wipe the Mini and return it and got the black out.

Yes and no. This thread is about 2012 Mac minis. However some of the 2011 minis had a similar issue. Here is one example:

Washed out colors can usually be fixed by calibrating your screen via System Preferences.
