Error 6 can be related to your security software settings. iTunes has to be able to contact Apple servers during syncing and checking for updates.

The above mentioned things are true but sometimes third party softwares are not able to be removed so you have to set your ipod as new ipod in itunes.

What is your basis for saying set up as new will work? To set up as new still requires that the computer contact the update server.
