iOS6 video subtitles button removes video controls

I got an iPod touch 5th generation delivered with iOS6.
Next to these I have iPod touch 4th generation iOS5 and iOS6

When I play movies with iOS6 and I want to use subtitels, pressing

the subtitle button kills the controls of the player. There is NO WAY

to open up the subtitles menu.

The first image shows the controls of the player....

Then pressing the subtitle icon (bottom right icon) and this whole field of icons

simple dissappears (see second image)

In the second image you can see the controls are gone.. There's no way to get

them back besides closing the movie and start it again. But then this will happen

again as soon as you press the subtitle buttons again.

This happened also on a 4th generation with iOS6. It worked perfect on iOS5.1.1

For your reference. On iPad it can work but iOS6 on an iPad has other problems

As this is an official Apple forum, I suspect that Apple representatives are reading

these posts as well. Can someone react with some timeline of resolving the

meanwhile huge list of defects of iOS6 ?

I have no suggestions except the standard restore the iPod.

Try a restore to factory settings/new iPod. It that does not work then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Try to restore from itunes it will download the ios firmware and restore your ipod.

Here is a quick way to fix it before Apple complies to US government guidelines and fixes this issue, unless it has been fixed with 6.0.2 or 6.1 on which I was not able to test.

With the control bar in view, rotate from vertical to horizontal view.

The (speech bubble) button appears and is NOT obscured by the volume slider as was previously the case in iOS5.

Let me know if it works.

@Marco, What you mention is not the issue. The issue is that when I have turned the iPod to get the speech bubble button visible, and then press that button, the subtitle menu is behind the video. While the menu is behind the video, it cannot be used (you can't select any audio track or subtitle track), and then the speech bubble icon is also not visible.

Confirmed to be still a problem in iOS6.1 on iPod 5th gen.

a) Opening the page in safari, play the video --> subtitle menu is ok

b) Save the page to homescreen (full screen web app), play the video --> subtitle menu is not ok (behind the video)

c) Run the webpage in a UIWebView, play the video --> subtitle menu is ok

So it seems to me that this is anohter game to annoy webapps started from the home page!

I'm sorry I didn't understand. I can't see the images you posted.

I've now follwed the link to the other thread and can see images which I believe refer to the same issue.

Can you post links to any sample?

MP4s played with JW Player seem to work in showing subtitles

I can play the video in the following page fine on iOS 6.0.1, just have to do the rotation fix.

Added images again

First image: Movie (m4v) with multiple audio and subtitel tracks inside. When device is rotated, the speech bubble icon appears.

Pressing the speech bubble icon, should reveal the audiotrack/subtitle selection menu, but that menu is behind the video and then it looks like this:

Rotating back to portrait and pressing the done button will shortly show the audiotrack/subtile menu which is overlayed by the video.

Not that this happens only when you have a webpage saved on the homepage, and it is set to fullscreen when started from the homepage.

If the same page runs in safari or in an UIWebView, then the menu does appear (see next screenshot)

This has nothing to do with JWplayer, only with Apple's movie player in the iPod being used in fullscreen web-app's started from the homescreen.

If I have time I will see if I can make a minimal testcase available, but that may take quite some time (as I am busy)

Managed to get a testcase done;

This testcase shows the problem with the audiotrack/subtitle menu. Note that I had to use anohter movie file which only contains audio tracks and no subtitles. But the problem shows up the same. You can also see that the audio tracks are all named "Stereo" on iOS6 while they show the correct name in iOS5 (and even iOS4.3.3)

OK now I understand,

let me outline the issues as I have understood them hoping it will help Apple or anyone else troubleshoot them.

First issue is that when viewing subtitled movies in Mobile Safari, the speech bubble does not appear in iOS 6.0.1 (I do have not updated to a later OS).

You have to rotate from landcape to portrait and then back to get it to work.

Second issue is that if you save the webpage http://www.maakmenietgek.nl/testcase/testcase.html to the home screen on your iPhone or iPod, then press pay, then rotate to get the speech bubble, when you tap on the speech bubble nothing happens. But as soon as you click done you can see the outline of the menu dissappearing.

I am using iPhone 5 and I think one issue might be that the webpage linked above does not use the whole screen as it is not optimized for iPhone 5 and in my case that might be the reason for the subtitle menu not appearing.

Here are two screenshots I was able to get.

Here you can see that the webpage is not covering the entire screen and even when I press play in the movie and then make it fulscreen it still does not cover the whole screen.

Here you can see that as soon as I exited full scren I could see for just a second the menu.

Hope this can help solve the issue.

I appreciate your comments and screenshots but the problem has nothing to do with iPhone (as stated before) nor has it anything to do with the video being fullscreen or not. I guess you can imagine that the fullscreen video will cover the entire menu so you can;t see a thing.

For the speech bubble not showing up, please create your own thread as it is not part of this problem.
