basically i see a screen that is all black with a huge triangle and an exclaimation mark inside and a comment underneath stating " unsupported image format " - no image ...

the guy at the apple store here in hong kong took my original iphoto library ( '09 ) and rebuilt / upgraded it on his laptop and then viewed in and all the images were there in his iphoto 11 ( 9.4.1 )

but when connected to my device, black triangles on my iphoto 11 ( 9.4.1 )

he reinstalled the entire ilife '11 and same problem ...

then he noticed the system on his laption was a 10.7.x - so the library was fine, it just couldn't be view in the 10.8.2 system.

another odd thing, if i use the iphoto '09 ( 8.4.1 ) and an non upgraded library - all the images are fine even on OS X 10.8.2

so it seems the issue is only when you combine an upgraded library in 9.4.1 iphoto '11 with the OS X 10.8.2 that the images are unviewable ...

That indicates that iPhoto has lost the connection between the preview and the full resolution photo - if the full resolution photo has not been deleted then a rebuild on your system should resolve the issue - Back up your iPhoto library, Depress the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

Have you done it on your system?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.

However I note that images are not visible in Preview either, and that might suggest a deeper problem too.

But first the ! problem:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Let us know how that works out.

You may have to start over from scratch with a new library as follows:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

1. Open the library package like this.

2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

If you still can't import those same files into the new library by this method they may have been damabed somehow. If you can find one you could try dropping a copy of it on this Automator workflow application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRG Profile which can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar and see if the converted file can be imported. If so you'll have to find and convert all of those files before adding the to a new library.
