Turn it upside down on your knee and smack the back of it with increasing velocity to see what happens.

I am an IT person, know computers well so I don't know why this would surprise me but this week my iPad fell off of my desk and the screen did just as in the original post. I couldn't even do my back up because I have a password on my iPad so I couldn't type that in. I had already made an appointment with the Genius Bar (2 hours one way away from me!!!) and do not have Apple care so was very upset and I read this post by alanfromnewtownards. I would have never in a million years dreamt this would work but I had absolutely nothing to lose so I did it. The first time, nothing but the I started patting all around the back while upside down then hit the menu button and OMG I almost peed my pants from laughing so hard that this is what it took to fix my sweet iPad. I love my Mac toys almost as much as my children and that's saying A LOT!!!! So, alanfromnewtownards, I cannot thank you enough! You are amazing and anyone who questions this unorthodoxed approach to iPad repair can either keep their broken iPad or pay large sums of money to get theirs fixed.

Okay so is this what everyone elses looked like? I've been doing this for a solid 30 minutes with only the little bit of luck of the actual screen turning back on. Do I keep going or hit harder?

I think it is because you smack the screen connector back in place.

after a drop the screen connector might loose a bit and cause these glitches.

my sister's iPad crashes regularly and the screen goes blue and so on. mostly without apple logo. if anyone knows how to fix it, please let me know (i do know the screen was replaced) (first gen iPad mini)

The screen may be broken, or it may be frozen. Try holding down the home button and the power button. You should see an Apple logo appear after around 30-45 seconds.

After this period of time is over, if you still don't see the Apple logo, your iPad's screen may be damaged. Check for cracks, or if there are none, it may be damaged from the inside. Thank you! This is how I did it and worked for me:

1. I held down the home button and the on/off button for about 15econds,
2. Placed the ipad face down on the bed and gave the ipad logo at the back one good smack
3. I held down the home and off/on button again

I was laughing through the whole post It reminded me of old TVs that needed to be banged on the side to get the reception improved.

Same thing happened to me when my son dropped my work iPad this morning. When I found Alanfromnewtonards' post, I thought it was a cruel joke. I nearly crapped myself when I smacked the back of it once... a good firm smack while face down on my knee... and it worked. Everything is back normal. Wahoo! Thanks Alan!!! You are a stud!!!

I very rarely post on sites such as this but I just had to say thanks. My daughter dropped my iPad on to a solid floor and was horrified when it wouldn't work again. I was surprisingly chilled, although inwardly gulping at the cost of replacing an expensive 64MB iPad. On reading this post I was inclined to think Alan was taking the p***, but to my amazement, it really does work. I would never have tried such a course of action without having first read the reactions from other posts, so, once again, this shows the benefits of a community coming together to fix our problems without the Big Apple's (very expensive) help. Hurray for Alan, indeed. You made my little daughter's day! And to any doubters out there, trust me, it works. Here's hoping my iPad has a long and happy life after its near-death experience!

I just had to email u all especially Happytaff. I dropped my Ipad and my screen turned blue as well. I almost passed out. I read your advice. I held the menu button and the on/off button down at the same time for about 10sec and the IPad actually came back on. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Holy Crap!! I read all this and was just smacking my iPad for a while thinking it was a joke. Then I finally pressed both buttons at the same time and it popped right back on! Ridiculous...but awesome!
