OMG!!! This made me smile when reading all the success stories and I headed off upstairs to find my sons 'blue screen' ipad. It had been forgotten about for around 3 months as we thought it would cost too much to be repaired.

Turned it upside down, smacked it a couple of times and it had life! Unfortunately though the screen was brightly coloured and not responding when I tried to swipe the 'slide' to turn on. Turned it over again and gave it a few further light smacks - woohoo!!! It is now fully working!

My son is going to over the moon when he gets in from school and I give him the good news.

Thank you so much Alan, you are a legend!

Greetings, this is my first post..from a long time..like everyone, first thought it was a joke..Ipad 2 with a black screen..after a few smacks got the color tv lines out of synch, when restarting got the Apple Blue screen of death..ehe..hilarious..reminded me of the win..lol....after a while black again, to the starting point..:-(..but with perseverance a firm smack on the apple..Voilá it worked..saw the black restart with white apple logo..Thanks a lot to everyone and Alan, for creating the post..i wounder were did you learn, this..besides the accelerometer out of synch, what does it?

Thank you 🙂

I had the same problem and did a search to resolve this issue and came upon this question by the OP. I was hesitant at first and then thought what do I have to lose since I thought the iPad may be broken. It took quite a few smacks with my hands and to my knees and Voila! It worked. Big Thanks to Alanfromnewtownards for his suggestion.

I have used these forums for answers for several years but have never created an account until now. I had to login just to say thank you. My 5 year old drop the iPad off the counter and we had the blue screen. Turned it over and lightly played the drums and it is back to normal. I have been working in IT for over 20 years and this is the one of simplest solutions I've run across that seems to work for a lot of people. It reminds me of the days when I would take a hard drive out and smack it on the ground to get it working long enough to pull information off of it. Thank you for the solution.

I Was about to write that this was bs in my case, because I have friggin slamdunked my iPad with my hand - and no cigar. But I left it like a disappoininting child for 3-4 hours while going out to dinner, so it could think about what it had done. When I came back, I thought "to **** with it", and decided to drop it from about thigh-height onto a rug, and on the third try my baby returned to me. I'm so grateful I tried again - because i had just about given up. I hit the sucker so hard and SO many time - my hand hurt like crazy after 30 minutes of exasperatingly beating the living daylights out of my ipad. But I'm currently writing this from the culprit itself, so what can I say - it friggin worked.

Same problem! Spent an hour smacking my Ipad and whining! No result!

Ready to call my husband and confess I broke it!

*** THEN I decided to take the case off... duh!!!

Gave it a few very hard smacks WITHOUT the case....BINGO!!!

Got my little ipad buddy back in my sweet palms and can't stop laughing!

THANKS ALAN!!!! I LOVE YOU!! seriously, if I wasn't married....

It does work!!

I dropped my Ipad2 on its vertical edge (from my chair) and I was really concerned when I noticed parallel silver/grey lines moving all along the screen, and that's it. I even tried recharging, switching off (nothing worked, and then I read the posts above, tried and in 4 shakes /jolts it started working back as normal.

Thanks Guys!!

This afternoon a friend brought over his first gen iPad, hoping I could fix it - He unfortunately dropped it and the screen went black but wasn't shattered, .. I could see a flash of the apple symbol just briefly so I knew the screen was still kind-of functioning.. assuming I'd have to replace the screen, I did a quick search and thanks to your advice I had it totally operational in 5 minutes .. Thank you

My technique:

I just placed it upside down in my hand and smacked the back of the case lightly at first and increasingly harder and after about 5 or 6 smacks the apple symbol was bright and it restarted

That saved me a lot of unnecessary work

omg thank you so much for the help also. I don't know if the ipad was dropped but being that it's my sons, it is very possible. It was on last night and my son fell asleep with it on, so I put it on the charger and turned it off. Woke up this morning to a blank blue/black screen but it showed it was on. Did the tapping thing, it turned funky and red and wouldn't clear up, so turned it off. As it turned off the screen was all red. Turned it back on to a blank screen, thought I'd lost it forever, tapped it several times all over the back of the ipad and bam it went back to normal. Thank you so much. My kids both have special needs, so these ipads are their life

i dropped my Ipad sideways, the screen is only black and it wont turn on
