It depends on the format and bit rate of the track. An average track from the iTunes Store will run about 7.5 megabytes, and a nano with a nominal storage capacity of 16GB will hold about 14.5 gigabytes of content (16GB is the unformatted capacity). You can do the math from there.

Thanks Neil and Varjak, those were helpful replies. So it is in the range of about 2,000 songs (give or take 400).
I just noticed that I have 3000 songs on my itunes now - about 19 gb. It might be good to have 32 gb for the future... - too bad the nano doesn't have that much. Oh well, one mustn't be greedy... it does have a radio!
Well, for only $50 more you can get a 32GB iTouch!
