Aloha:
When I first plugged in the Capsule all seemed to be going along fine and after a short time I got a steady green light.
I am not quite sure what caused it but now all I get is a blinking amber light. I can't get control back.
Help, what might I have done to cause that problem???

There are many many issues that cause the blinking led and loss of connection.
Shear stupidly bad networking in ML not the least.
Find out the issue in the airport utility.
We need to know what OS you are running.
Reboot the TC.. if that is not effective, reboot the whole network and restart in order. Modem, TC.. clients.
We also need to know how the TC fits in the network??
Use ethernet not wireless for setup.. expect issues if you upgrade installed Mountain Lion (ML) and get wireless connectivity problems.
As mentioned in other threads.. use SMB standard names. for TC, wireless and hard disk.. it can help.
Short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.

Hi I tried what you suggested, but I still have the blinking amber light. Also I do not see the TC of the left side of the airport utility app. I di when I first plugged it in, however????

If not please do so..
If you have to isolate the computer from the network. plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.. press and hold in the reset button for 10sec until the front led flashes rapidly and redo the setup.
Make sure the TC is in bridge.. and tell us are you going to use ethernet or wireless??
Why not just replace the Airport with the TC.. there is no need for both??
To change over you need to power down the cable modem so it can pick up the address of the TC.. and you will of course then use the TC in router mode, unless the cable modem is also a router.
Thanks again. So I don't need my airport any more, that's good the fewer pieces the better. My cable modem is a Toshiba PCX2600. Is that model a router as well?

Just to let you know, your suggestion of dumping my old airport, as unneeded, seems to have solved my problem, thanks.
I connected my TC directly into my cable modem via eathernet and right now the green light on the TC is burning brightly!🙂
Data has be downloading all night and probably will continue to do so for some time to come. I have almost a TB to back up.
So you have not only helped, you have solved my problem!

OK, so I spoke too fast!! i am notout of the woods at all.
I do have a green light on my TC this morning, but it does'nt show on the Airport Utility. It was there last night, but not there now????

Does internet still work?
If so you are facing a typical problem that is caused by the update to TC firmware to 7.6.x but seems to not like some earlier OS.. 10.6 etc. The update was for Lion and ML.. but it is actually far better running 7.5.2.. only Apple decided for you.. you should also be running at least Lion and so all the TC released in the last year cannnot revert to earlier firmware.. although the same model could in the past.
And they call MS the dark empire!!
Reboot the TC.. that is usually all that is needed.. maybe a reboot of the whole network..

I have come to the end of the rope and I am about to tie one end to an anchor and the other to my nice new TC and toss the @#$##!&%^* thing into the sea off of Maui.
I have now completely removed my old airport and installed TC in its place on my Tashiba PCX2600 Cable Modem*. At least four times I have gotten the green light on the TC and started the down load. It putts along for for several hours looking like it's doing good things, but it never finishes. Finally the green light goes out and the TC dissappears from the Airport Utility and I have to start all over again!
I have to go through the whole proeedure to get it back to where I can try another backup and it's always the same it quits after many hours of work.
Today I gave up and have installed my trusty Airport, so That I can, at least, continue talking with you on the internet.
My queston now is how can I keep my Old Faithful Airport to have connectivity on the net, but have the TC off to the side to make back-ups. Or do I take the Blasted TC out about 3 miles and toss it overboard?

If the modem works with the airport no reason for it not to work with the TC.
Understand the frustration..
Are you trying to connect by wireless or ethernet?
Which ever way,, you should set the names correctly to SMB.. that is all the names.. TC name, Hard Disk Name and Wireless names.. no spaces.. no special characters.. ie pure alphanumeric.. absolutely no apostrophe.. and short.. up to 12 characters is more than enough.
But you should be able to run in bridge mode to the airport and turn wireless completely off if you don't want it.
There is a few other things but for brand new,, can you just ring apple support see if they have any bright ideas..

Also I'll contact apple, but that is usually a long and rocky road.

Before I called Apple, that's always a long and complicated task, I tried to start up the TC with SMB names.
But the only way I can get TC started is to switch my internet coonectivity over to the TC and I sure do not want to do that.
So, how can I get the TC going to use as my backup machine and still keep my internet connectivity with the Airport??

So you are connected to the airport with wireless?
You can run dual networks.. here is how..
The main internet connection and the secondary connection must use different connection types.. so one is ethernet and one wireless. The main connection is with the internet link, so you need to keep it using router.. ie gateway address and dns.. the secondary connection must not have those.. it is simply IP and subnet mask.
So to get this running you still need to isolate the computer from the internet for the time being..
Before doing so open the network preferences and find the current IP of the airport. ie by default it is 10.0.1.1
So to fix up the TC you have to move its IP address. Make it 192.168.1.1 for example.
Doesn't matter what you use just it has to be different.
Then setup the local network using static IP. So for ethernet.. 192.168.1.10 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
You don't need anything else.
Now allow the computer to connect to the internet and the TC at the same time.. open the airport utility and make sure you can still access the TC.
If you run into trouble.. give me screen shots of what you setup.. I should have asked you to do that already.. perhaps something is set wrongly and it is much easier to see in a shot.
Don't get frustrated.. take a break.. if some of this stuff is new it takes a while to absorb.

Ok, image I can see now.. and great.. using wireless..
I will try and demonstrate the method. From my setup.
I have a wireless link to my modem.. TG782T.. with IP of 192.168.2.107
I have a TC setup on ethernet running as router in default mode.
This is a clean blank TC.. so just ignore all the errors including the failure to get WAN IP..
You can factory reset your TC and do the same thing.. but you will need to set another IP.
Don't worry about the errors etc.
Now I have set a fixed ip.. no router no dns.
Open finder and the TC and disk is available.
But you have internet on a different IP subnet.. so you can use the TC purely as a network drive.. on one computer.
My new time capsule arrived this morning, but doesn't seem to be working - need help!
