I have just recently purschased a new 15 inch retina macbook pro and have realised that with light usuage such as web browing and skype. The mbp becomes quite hot under the screen and sometimes even the keyboard. Is this normal or is it faulty?

Ok

First: rMBP running Mail, Chrome, JollyVNC to my MacPro

Second: rMBP running same as above plus Win7-32 VM and Win7-64 VM. Both VMs were relatively idle as the compiler processes run too fast to capture a screen shot. When compiling the processor on the rMBP jumps to about 8-10% is all

Third: rMBP running same as above adding a Windows 8 VM:

I have a 15 inch macbook pro retina that I purchased in early October - I find that it overheats when I run certain applications.

I monitor the temperature with smcFanControl.

At idle - light web browsing (safari or firefox) and MS Office - the temperature is usually between 45-50 degrees

When I have more programs open (itunes, watching movies in VLC) and am downloading heavily - it is usually up around 65 degrees which is still not too bad.

However - as soon as I start streaming video in flash player (especially within Chrome) or using skype I can see the temperature spike to around 90 degrees. I really feel like this is some sort of problem in the OS working with certain plugins. Has anyone else noticed the overheating isolated to situations like this?

Just bought a new 2013 Macbook Pro Retina Display and had this issue. Was at a coffee shop put it to sleep put in its case and inside my bag 4 hours later it was scorching hot andthe battery was low. Worried that it is going to fry itslef.

Can apple do anything to fix this? I feel like a $2500 shouldn't have a problem like this. My old Macbook never had an issue with going to sleep. I checked if I had it set to look for mail or anything and it seemed like my setting were all correct.

Help!

Just bought my MBP-R 13'' last week, it lives on a well ventilated desk in my room and when it's not there it's in a well ventilated, air conditioned classroom.

This morning I went to power it up to take notes in one of my classes, it wouldn't turn on. Putting it away in my backpack I continued on my day. A short while later I feel an intense heat radiating through my backpack, I take out the laptop, it is too hot to touch, literally. Despite the proactive measures I take to keep this laptop in top condition it is now overheated, will not turn on, it is and still hot as I write this from an Apple Store laptop, hours later! The fan was working as hard as it could but it's not running anymore. Odd.

Unfortunately I have no idea why this situation happened. I use this computer for web browsing, documents, and occasionally iTunes / Spotify. No intensive tasks. Is this a software issue? A hardware issue? Currently at the Apple store, I'm hoping they will replace the laptop completely. The concern I have is that the heat will have caused long term thermal damage to the internal components of the computer.
