Delete it for testing purposes. When you're done, you put it back. Outlook uses IMAP. Everything should be stored on the server.

Then;

Did you try opening the contact, tapping Edit, tapping the field name you want to change, then scrolling to the bottom and tapping Add Custom Label?

If you are syncing your contacts with and exchange account or Outlook you may not have the option to add custom labels. If you sync them with iCloud, you should.

I am syncing with iCloud on my iPhone but the "Add Custom Label" option does not appear on my list of options either. I really need to be able to add options such as "On Location Phone #1" "On Location Phone #2" "Skype #" "Direct Line" "Magic Jack" etc.

I have noticed that the Names linked to LinkedIn do have the "Add Custom Label" feature but connecting my iPhone to LinkedIn was a nightmare so I turned that off at least a year ago and I don't want to reconnect for this feature.

How can I figure out why some names have the option and others don't?

I have the exact same problem on my iPhone 6S Plus IOS 10.0.2 but it does work on my iPhone SE IOS 10.0.2. Don't laugh (I'm a technology hoarder - throw nothing out till it's knackered) - it works perfectly on my old iPhone 3GS IOS 6.1.6. Please get your finger out AppleCare and fix it.

There's a simple answer to this one as to why Custom Name appears to behave differently across different iPhone/iPad models and versions of IOS. It's because they have not been set up correctly to achieve it. Two things must be done:-

1. In Settings/Contacts the Default Account must be set to iCloud

2. Just reboot the device.

Sorry about the jibe AppleCare but this one's been around for 4 years - like a lot of others.

This works as of 26 Feb 2017 on iPhone 7 with iOS 10.2.1:

From your home screen, go to Setting > Contacts > Default Accounts. Set default account to iCloud.

Problem solved!!!

This didn't work for my iPhone SE. Does anyone know how to get the Custom Label back for iPhone SE?

What email accounts do you have on your phone? Just iCloud? Or do you have, perhaps, a work Exchange account? Exchange accounts prevent the custom labels.

I have an Outlook mail account and a Gmail account.

See what happens if you delete the Outlook account.
