iOS 6 with iPad 3: App Store search won't show iPhone Apps if search query has no results for iPad Apps

Hi All,

I've recently come across what appears to be a bug in the App Store application which occurs on at least the iPad 2 and 3 with iOS 6. The issue prevents you from finding an iPhone Application if searching for it by name and that search does not bring up any "iPad App" results. Please see steps below to reproduce:

1. Get an iPad 2 or 3 with iOS 6

2. Launch the App Store application

3. Search for the name of an iPhone application which will garner zero results in "iPad Apps". For example, search for "Stacheify", which is an iPhone application.

4. Notice you will get "No results for "stacheify"" and by default, you will have the "iPad Apps" tab selected

5. Select the "iPhone Apps" tab.

6. Notice the page still says "No results for "stacheify", even though Stacheify is an iPhone application. It's possible the page isn't refreshing when you select the "iPhone Apps" tab.

7. (Optional) Search for "Moustache" and select the iPhone Apps" tab; you will properly see Stacheify.

8. (Optional) Go to Safari, and in Google, search for Stacheify. Find the iTunes App Store link for the application and notice the deep link properly launches the application's page in the App Store application.

This is a particularly frustrating problem because many users will search for the full name of an iPhone application and if that search query does not have any iPad results, they will not be able to find the iPhone application.

I can reproduce this issue every time with every application that fits the criteria. I've also reproduced it on 3 different iPads. Are other people able to reproduce this issue? Is it a known issue? Should I submit a bug to Apple and if so, should I submit a bug report on their "feedback" page or should I submit an actual developer bug report?

Thanks for your time.

I'm not sure that this is really a "bug". iTunes knows that you are connecting using an iPad 2 or newer. What they are doing is showing you the apps that work on the iPad, and by the way might also work on an iPhone or iPod.

What the developers decided was that it could cause more customer support calls if they showed iPhone apps when you were searching for an iPad app (with an iPad and even if the iPhone apps are in a different tab). Some people would still try to purchase them even though they were using an iPad.

I've had the same issue and can recreate every time. If there is no iPad app that appears with my search criteria but there is an iPhone app, it does not show in the iPhone tab. This is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.

I have submitted a support request to apple and they acknowledged the issue and told me it would be a 6-8 turn around time. Hopefully if others submit the same issue, they will address it sooner.

I have 100% verified this bug. Just purchased a Mini and found this annoying bug. I wanted to install TaskRabbit, an iPhone app, but upon searching for it in the App Store was unable to find it. Pushing the "iphone" tab in the search results does not call it up.

Additionally, the result is annoying because, as another person noted, it also prevents iphone apps from transferring over.

That said, there are some easy workarounds:

1) For purchased iPhone apps, if you go to "Purchased Apps" tab you can find them and install them.

2) You can do a safari search for the app, and click the link, and this will take you to the App Store install page.

But it is obviously a bug.

I have the same thing on my iPad Mini.

One thing to report, though. It's *not* iOS 6 point anythings fault. I searched for an iPhone app on my iPad mini, and had this bug. However, I then searched on my iPhone running iOS *6.0.1*, and found the app no problem.

Apparently, Apple just thinks that iPads shouldn't use iPhone apps anymore! Despite the fact that several very important apps (ie my *Bank and Credit Card* apps) are iPhone only!
