That seems fast with wifi off. You can try:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Tips:

-Turn on Airplane Mode (turns off all networking: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location services [I think], etc.)

-Open the multitasking bar (double-click Home button), hold down on an app, and close apps you don't want open

-Restart your iPod touch

-Lower your brightness (5th generation does not have ambient light sensor)

I have the same issues: iPod Touch 5th gen, barely a month old. Hopeless battery life, even with all the apps off, WiFi, Bluetooth...etc etc. Hard restarts. Na da.

Now no longer charges, the red low battery/charging never goes away. Plug into iMac or with a wall charger. Does not 'mount' in iTunes either...just sits there.

I had a funny feeling with this new generation of Apple product things were going to be different.

Ironically my 4 year old touch is now out-performing it. Still original battery.

At least I can replace the battery myself on that one. Pity the poor devils who have the new gen of laptops.

FYI

Hi, cable OK.

iPod bricked...hardware 'issue'

Purchase date October 12 Ser. No. CCQJF4NMF4K1

Cannot fault Apples after sales service though, replacement there and then. Mind you what can they do now that current devices are no longer 'user serviceable...or for that matter manufactuer serviceable.

When a device is built in such a way that it is not viable for the manufacturer to attempt a repair...what else can they do? Certainly mine will not get back into circulation... engraved!

I guess to attempt a battery replacement would be much the same..time will tell.

Will we I wonder in the near future be prepared to buy a device and accept that once the battery dies that is it..get a new one.

An 'budget' iPod or laptop with a 4 year battery life...but no means of replacement.

Hmmm. pabulum...I think I have seen the future.

It's not as bad as you say. After the warranty period expires Apple will replace your iPod with a refurbished one with a brand new battery for $79. They will then refurbish yours with a new battery and a new back to reuse for thenext person who requires an exchange. Or you can find a third party repair shop who will replace you battery within a couple of hours. I just had my battery replaced for $45 in my area.

Per the iiPod touch wiki they use different batteries:

4G......................................................5G

3.7 V 3.44 W·h (930 mA·h)3.7 V 3.8 W·h (1,030 mA·h)[57]

I don't know what a third party repair shop would charge in the UK, but I assume that the cost would be the same for a 4g and 5 g ipod. The work of opening up the iPod and replacing the battery is essentially the same and I think they use the identical batteries.
