iPhone can't connect to 5 GHz router network

I have a Netgear router that sets up two networks: a 2.4 GHz b/n and a 5 GHz a/n. I'm using WPA2-PSK [AES] and I have the right password. My 6.0.1 iPhone 5 connects to the 2.4 GHz network fine but "cannot join" the 5 GHz one; any ideas how to fix that?

By default, some routers will broadcast the same SSID for both bands, & your phone will automatically connect to the band with the best combination of signal strength, noise, etc. So, make sure you have different SSID's for both bands. After verifying that, on your phone, Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Now see if your phone sees the 5GHz band & you can connect.

The fix I found that works is to make sure that the SSID does not have a hyphen in it. Mine was like this, "Name-5G". Removing the hyphen from the SSID and making it "Name5G" allows it to connect. The only catch is you have to connect manually using the "Other" option. This was the only way we could get our 6 to connect to 5G. Seems like there might be an issue w/ connecting when there are special characters in the SSID. Good luck!
