So we're planning on getting an Apple TV or Roku. I've always liked Apple's products, and would prefer that. One thing though.
Our tv has no HDMI port (Sony Wide Screen KP-46WT500 Rear Projection TV). I've read we can still hook it up with an adapter, but a second issue arose. How would we hook up the audio? I know the Apple TV has an optical input. So how should we go about this?
Using an appropriate adapter or converter, you can connect your Apple TV to any number of display and audio devices imaginable.
Shop for an appropriate "HDMI to DVI with audio" converter with audio outputs appropriate for your TV. Here is one for example:

Do not use the Sony's component or composite video inputs. You will want to pass the digital video signals without alteration. HDMI to DVI is the only way to do that with your TV.
So if I bought the second one, I would plug my AppleTV in to it using a standard HDMI cable (male HDMI on both sides), then a DVI cable from the converter to my regular TV?

People also said that we could hook up the Apple TV using HDMI to Composite/component cables (no adapter). Is that possible?
Possible, yes, but as I wrote don't use composite video unless you want completely awful video quality.
Composite video was the standard for many years but once you get used to high definition digital video anything less seems unwatchable.
Besides, to convert HDMI to composite you need more than just a passive adapter. Composite video is an analog signal. Same for component video.
Once a signal is digital, keep it that way unless there is no other option for your TV. Since yours has a DVI input, use it.
Converting to analog like component or Composite Will mean no hdcp ad IN netflix or iTunes stuff Will not work
I bought the monoprice component you suggested only to find out that both of the adaptors you mentioned are DVI to HDMI and not HDMI to DVI which is what apple TV needs.
Aside from this I live in the UK, the $30 adaptor cost an extra $30 to send according to UPS for which it then charged an extra £10 'brokerage fee' for paying a £10 import fee on my behalf. Also came in a comedy sized box as if they were attempting to shaft me at customs.
Please nobody else buy these products or deal with UPS if you can avoid it.
I too am trying to connect my Apple TV to a non HDMI TV and I follow what you said to Neil except I don't know wherre the RCA audio cables would attach to. One side would I assume go into the tv input and outputs but where would the other 2 go?
the rca cable should be attached to something which can play audio input'd in to it's RCA connectors be it a reciever or streo or tv or a converter which make RCA into minijack and you connect your headset don't matter really

I'm afraid I can't be too specific since I am here in New York and our tv is in south Florida. The set is a Sony 50 inch (Bravura?) that was purchased in 2004. It si a rear projection set that utilizes 3 lcd screens.
There are a host of input/output slots for rca cables in the rear of the set and a number as well in the front of the set.

Along these lines, my tv HAS the appropriate jack only it's not called HDMI but "input" ... know of a converter for me??
