Invalid SIM msg rec'd after OS 6.0.1 update

Well.....here we go again,

To start off, Sprint says they're aware of the problem and they have rec'd a "workaround" to fix it.

The good news is: it works if you're in a stable environment ( constant Sprint LTE or 3G signal)

The bad news is: if you are in an area where the phone is searching alot (like ME in Atlanta), you will get this msg again.

the Sprint Tech rep had me switch off the WiFi and verify through Safari that I was able to get cellular signal. She then sent an update to the phone, had me power it down and restart. I thought I was in the clear until the Invalid SIM msg came up again. She said there was nothing else she could do about it on her end...

Off to the Apple store I go.......

g_soriano,

I just got resolution to my problem yesterday. I went to Apple on last Monday and they gave me a new device that was still running 6.0. I then did the upgrade to 6.0.1 with the old (corrupt) SIM card installed. Sprint ( after much back and forth) tracked down a new SIM card for me at one of the local stores. They installed the new SIM, updated my profile (##8....#) and it works fine.

I am a bit leary on the lack of training/support provided to Sprint service techs. I realize that SIM's are a "new" issue with Sprint, but it should never take a week to restore a phone.

Long story short, tell everyone (Sprint/Apple) that you keep getting an invalid SIM msg and that you need a new SIM.

I had my phone replaced last Sunday with new SIM, apple employee updated to 6.0.1 and activated the service on the new phone and worked for like 20min as soon as I got out of the store it started doing it again. So I came back to the specialist that helped me replacing the phone and was kind of surprised that it did it on a new phone with a new sim. Took me to a more advanced specialist person to run a test and replaced the sim. It did it again on a bew phone.

I called Sprint last Monday explained to them all the proccess i've been doing and they just said they're aware of the problem but have no solution but to wait 72hrs from the day apple replaced the phone.

Wednesday after the 72hrs they asked to wait and no solution i called Sprint. They wanted me to do all the reset and restore steps again. I asked to speak to a manager and after 30min on hold they did transfered me to a manager. No luck on getting the problem solve talking to the manager but then again kept saying it is not a Sprint fault so decided to blame it on Apple and asked me to go to Apple and he'll call me next Sunday to check if they fixed it.

Thursday went to Apple and they can't give me a replacement phone since they give me one less than a week ago and it is not solving the problem. They gave me a NEW SIM which they couldn't activated in store. So i had to called Sprint to activated the SIM and well as now the problem is still unsolved by either company. :(

Here is a repost of my comments on a similar thread:

This is why I do NOT do updates when they first come out. I just updated to 6.0.1 yesterday (Nov. 14) on my Sprint iPhone 5 and shortly thereafter got the "Invalid SIM" message preventing me from making calls or having any data connection. As others experienced, I could restart the phone and it would go away, temporarily... but eventually return. Great... as I'm going on a 5 day west coast work trip Friday.

I called Sprint tech support and they wanted to take me through the typical b/u & restore process. I have not seen one person reporting that this permanently fixes anything. I said, thanks, but I can do that on my own time later if need be. I put more stock in others' experiences that a new SIM card was the only true fix.

Next called the Apple Store near me to make an appointment. The girl made several attempts to convince me to call Apple Care instead to deal with this issue. I told her I didn't get AC but she said everyone gets one free session within first 90 days of a new iPhone. I insisted on a Genius Bar tech appointment, which was made for this morning.

At the appointment the tech said he never personally has dealt with this problem. I told him what I had read about likely SIM card corruption caused by the 6.0.1 update process. He disappeared with my phone into the back room for a long time. I'm starting to think Wut T F? Then he finally emerges with a brand new Sprint SIM as he's busting it out of it's perforated plastic holding tabs. He said Apple acknowledges that this is the official fix but he had a hard time finding one for Sprint. Replaced the old with the new, turned the phone on and it has worked fine since, OS 6.0.1 still intact and no re-activation through Sprint needed. (Unless he did something I was unaware of regarding updating SIM info. to Sprint). I really don't think so, since I asked him, "Don't I have to reactivat the phone with Sprint because of the new SIM card." He answered, "Sprint's SIM card does nothing in that respect."

OK, then... but my iPhone 5 seems back to normal. Apparently it's the update process itself that corrupts the SIM.

ADDED: Since my phone was already updated to 6.0.1 the new SIM should be fine.

Bad news. After the SIM card replacement all was fine in my home area for 36 hours. Then I got on a plane and went from Ohio to San Francisco. Upon arriving I turned my phone on and the SIM failure returned.

So apparently recorruption is posssible. It would seem switching Sprint service areas has a lot to do with it. I'm stuck 4 days across the country with an iPhone that doesn't work. (Well it works unless I want to make or recieve calls or use data on the network. Or for 2 minutes after I restart the phone).

Ok, after almost 2 weeks of having the same issue Sprint called me with a fix for the problem.

What they did is that they remove my phone from account and added a "fake" phone to register the SIM into it. Once they were able to activated the SIM and was working right they took the "fake" phone from my account and added the phone I have with me.

They asked me to power off and then on with the SIM in the phone, then once the phone was on do the ##873283# (##UPDATE#) let it finished and problem fixed! 🙂 Call Sprint have them do the same to your phone / account that should fix the problem. Make sure you have the IC CID # (SIM card #) they're gonna ask you all the numbers.

Thanks g_soriano.

I called Sprint on my iPhone (after a restart), as I had no other phone to use.

After having my SIM card replaced everything was fine for 36 hours... until I flew to the west coast and turned my phone on. Same SIM card failure cropped up. Called and found out that apparently Sprint has a programming work around at their end for the iOS issue. (They just figured this out between Apple and them). Call carrier, tell them the problem, turn phone off and then back on 15 minutes later. Sprint magically fixes it.

Last night and then this morning I could only call Sprint on my cell. Both times they said they should be ble to fix it, although I questioned how that was possible. The second time I did the ##873283# Update. Both times I told them an Apple Store tech changed the SIM but it didn't seem to sink in to the Sprint tech support people. Called again tonight from a land line I finally had access to (I'm working out of state on a remote production).

First thing, I stressed Apple put a new SIM card in after the first iOS update SIM failure. She asked for my ICCID# which I gave her. Moments later she said, "For some reason that doesn't match what I have for your device."

HELLOOOO... ding ding ding ding, I just told you Apple gave me a new one! So she changed it in their system and then had me again do the ##873283# Update. Seems like it's finally fixed (so far so good).

The first instance was related to the iOS update. The second instance was, I think, because I actually had an "Invalid Card" not registered or programmed to my device. (Weird that I got no Error message until 36 hours later after I travelled across the country and powered my phone back on).

Just seems like Apple and Sprint support could have been more on the same page for this whole ordeal.

I bought a brand new, 64g ipad with retina display 2 WEEKS AGO!!! I did the iOS 6.0.1 update this morning at my house & immediately after the update I started getting the "SIM failure" messages. The strange thing is that I had my wifi on ONLY, I keep my cellular data off when im at home or work & i kept getting SIM failure messages. It kept happening and after multiple shut downs I called sprint. The guy told me to take out the SIM card & put it back in. So far no more problems, but im nervous to see if that changes in the next few days. If i knew this would happen, i would have gotten a different tablet.
