Is it possible to download photos from photo stream

I can find information about photo stream, how to turn it on, but what I need to know is how to get photos off the stream and onto any device? Is this possible? If not what's the use, the photos will be gone after certain number of days.

I dont want to just see the stream as it doesn't last, I thought the whole idea was to be able to get them from one device to another.

Specifically if I load photos to my lap top can I download them to my ipad. Not view the stream, download them.

yea it too late i am trying to get back the pix that are dissapearing off of my old phone....from photo stream....and trying to figure out WHY they are dissapearing

They're disappearing because they're supposed. This is well documented on apple's site.

If you don't have a backup, they're gone.

Yea but what doesn't make sense is whay some of them are still there ansd some are not....If thats the case then they shodul have all dissapaeared. I am well aware NOW that its documented all over the siter if i am looking for info on photostream as I stated I did not know and the issue is me gettign them back and its not possible now. So im sure they are gone now....so oh well
