Keep purchases in the cloud without downloading

I'm just wondering if it is possible when buying new content from iTunes to not have it automatically download to any of my devices or computers.

Now that iTunes music can be streamed over wi-fi and cellular, when I make new purchases I'd rather they simply be tagged that I bought them but not download to my device(s) unless I specifically chose to.

I'm trying to keep as much free space on my devices and laptop.

I know that you can turn the feature off on iDevices but I haven't yet determined if you can turn off downloads on the iDevice or computer that you are originating the purchase from. It seems to me that when you make a new purchase you HAVE to doanload it to at least one device or computer (the one you made the purchase from).

Any way you can set it to not do that?

Thoughts?
