messages not marked as read

I have a macbook-pro retina and an ipad 1st gen.

When I get a new message in Messages it will not mark as read on my macbook until I read it on my ipad.

How do I get messages on the macbook to mark a message as read?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Hi,

If I have my Mac On and Messages open and have my iPhone On as well then both will indicate Unread messages.

The iPhone will have the red number over the App's icon.

The Messages app on the Mac will have a red number on the DOCK icon but will also title the Messages window with "|Unread Messages" and any chat on the left with Unread Messages in it will get marked with a blue dot.

It can be difficult to get messages to "Accept" you have brought the chat to the "front" and read the Message(s).

However it does seem to be resolved if you send a reply.

I have not noticed that it requires me to read it on the iPhone as well.

It is a common complaint that reading and deleting it on one device does not mark the other as read of delete.

In some cases an iMessages may be read and deleted on the iPhone but the sync process on the Mac Messages app may well show the same iMessage again as "Sync" is "Display on all Devices" and not any "keep up to Date" variation.

The upshot of that is the Mac can then store chats/iMessages which the iPhone may not have room for.

If you were at you computer and not reading the Messages on the iPhone it would have unread copies of the conversations you were having on your Mac.

That would be normal.

Thank you for your quick reply Ralph. I am experiencing the issue even if I reply to a message from my Mac, the badge icon still reads that I have unread messages until I read them on my iPhone. Messages seem to sync just fine between devices, when sent from Mac they appear on iPhone and visa versa.

Your last paragraph

"If you were at you computer and not reading the Messages on the iPhone it would have unread copies of the conversations you were having on your Mac.

That would be normal."

so are you saying that if I am working at my Mac with my iPhone powered on next to me at my desk and someone sends me an iMessage and I reply via my messages App on my Mac, I should still have an unread message on my iPhone? And should I also have a badge icon number of "1" on my messages app icon in the Dock until I read the message on my iPhone?

I am saying that the iPhone will change the number to as many iMessages items it counts to.

(it occurs to me that in this respect the two apps may count differently. On the Mac individual iMessages (or IMs) are counted from the same Conversation/Chat. I am sure I have only seen the iPhone version have one count per conversation no matter how many iMessages had arrived).

The Dock on the Mac will only show an red Count number if the Message be it iMessages or IM until such time as your read that Chat or Conversation on the Mac.

The title bar of the Messages window also read "Unread Message" and the individual chat or iChat Conversation will have a blue blob next to it.

Basically the two apps are different but compatible.

The Sync process is only "Display on all Devices"

Anything beyond that is treated separately by each app.

Ifg it is unread on the iPhone as you are having the Conversation on the Mac then it will stay unread until you look and deal with it on the iPhone no matter what you have done to individual or whole conversations on the Mac.

The same is true if like me you only have the computer on for a few hours and most conversations are on the iPhone whilst the Mac is shut down.

When it syncs the Mac Version may show Conversations or iMessages that you have dealt with on the iPhone to the point where your deleted them.

No Dock Count number. Title has changed and the Blue Indicator has gone.

HI,

There may also be differences from when Messages was at version 7 in OS X 10.8 and 10.8.1 and when it became version 7.0.1 in oS X 10.8.2 and the iOS 6 update that added syncing iMessages sent to the iPhone Number that dramatically increased the workload in some cases.

Just as an FYI I never got this problem completely solved. I spoke with apple support for a while and they had no idea. It still happens from time to time but only after a reboot. When it happens I log into the guest account on my computer and load up ichat. After logging in it marks all the messages as read. I then logout and switch back to my normal account and it seems to work fine from there. I suspect something got messed up during my switch from my macbook air to my imac as I used timecapsule to migrate my data. Apple support suggested that reinstalled the OS may resolve the issue by I only have a 3MB dsl connection and haven't had time to dedicate to trying that.

Hi,

Understood.

It seems there are more people that are reporting that the iMessage seems to need reading in both places.

(my own experience is I do not have to).

I will stay subscribed to this thread for more updates.
