How do I switch from credit card to none without creating a new account?

Try purchasing and redeeming an iTunes Gift card and then try deleting the credit card.

For the standard account like you have, a valid payment method is needed even for free app.

Sounds like your card cannot be authorized for iTunes. This happened to me a few months ago. Check iTunes on your PC/Mac and see if your card is authorized. If not, it will not be able to be switched to "none". You'll have to contact Apple Assistance, or buy an iTunes giftcard and put in the inf for that instead of the credit card. Sorry.

Did you follow these instructions as written? The email address has to be one not used with Apple before like in trying to set up an account previously.

i agree and i also would not like to keep creating new apple accounts everytime i want to purchase a free app. i am now at my fourth apple id.
