Mac Mini (2012) HDMI losing sync (blank screen/snow)

Looks like my mini has the HDMI issue that others have reported on the macrumors forums as well as here.

Mine exhibits the blank screen/snow issue ONLY when the HDMI port is used. This happens with HDMI->DVI adapter and also with pure HDMI cabling.

With the same screen, mini and DVI cable this does not occur.

This is a fresh Mini 2012 Server i7 model.

Do I need to report this in an official capacity somewhere (this is only the second ever apple hardware fault I've encountered in twenty years). Should I just be patient for a possible fix (as I don't need the hdmi port

I bought the Mini in my local Apple store in the UK and, following three calls to Apple Care, exchanged it after a week (I hadn't even read this at that point). Needless to say the replacement had an identical fault. I read this thread and as a result I telephoned the manager of the store and in response to his question as to what I would like him to do, I suggested a TB to DVI adapter which was identified in this thread as a work-around. He immediately agreed and one arrived by courier mid-morning the following day.

I was very polite, it wasn't his fault and I wanted him on my side.

I hope it works for you.

I'm also having the same problem. I bought my new MM on Sunday, had the issue from the first time I turned it on. I exchanged it on Tuesday and the new unit had the same problem!!

I called Apple support last night and the tech at first said he didn't know about the issue, then after putting me on hold for a couple of minutes told me using the Thunderbolt display port may work. He also said they were working on an update, but had no idea when it would be ready. Also, he DID NOT give me a new adapter, how did you guys go about getting one?

Actually, on a side note, did you have to calibrate your colour settings when you connected for 2012 Mac Mini to an HDMI monitor?

I found that the colours were completely saturated and nothing like my 2010 Mac Mini which was awesome, just lacked the power (hence my decision to go for quad core i7!)

First you'll need to find a good Apple store, one that IS aware of this issue. Ask to speak to the manager. Bring them up to date about the mini HDMI defect. Let them know that you are willing to return your mini, but wanted to first try a different adapter before getting the refund. Let them know that other Apple stores are in fact giving customers the adapter at no charge to prevent the return. If you have a good Apple store then they should be more than happy to help you. You could also try calling Apple care.

If you're talking about washed out colors, then that's a separate issue not connected with the HDMI issue. You can almost always correct this by simply calibrating your monitor. System Preferences > Displays > Color > Calibrate. The more time you spend on it the better the results. You can also make a profile at that time. Hope it helps 🙂

I talked to apple support again tonight, the tech I have been working with the last week or so said that the engineers have been getting a lot of tickets with the issue, and are working on a patch. I'm not the first to report this, but the more the better. Glad to see its moving somewhere. All of the people calling in defiantly helped!

And just to let everyone know I'm in the US with a 2012 Mac mini server, using HDMI to DVI that came with it, and have received a few snow screens since purchase.
