Mid-2011 iMac running Lion slows down after a few hours.

I upped the RAM to 20 GB but that hasn't helped. When I check with Activity Monitor, the most CPU usage is by ActivityMonitord, followed by SystemUIServer. Once I restart, everything is fine for a few hours but then it slows down again. As an example, opening System Preferences takes just under 2 minutes during the slow down.

Any ideas? I was wondering if it might be due to PPC code remnants; I've tried to delete all PPC applications but there may be pieces I've missed.

What I am trying to figure out is why I did NOT have the problem on my old iMac G5 ALS 2.0 GHz but when I migrated to an iMac Intel i5 2.1 GHz, I did. iStat Menus worked fine with the PPC chip, but caused a problem with Intel chips. The new machine has more memory than the G5 (initially 2x, now 10x).

I looked through those earlier links but didn't see anything that might apply, so I'll have to keep revisiting it.
