What is Genieo and why did it appeared misteriosouly on my MacBook Pro?

Today I was using my MacBook and misteriosouly I saw something on my dock. There was an icon saying install Genieo. I ask my brother if he downloaded something and he told me that he haven't use my computer. Fortunetely I have a passcode so nobody can istall a program without the code.... I feel scared because this morning I saw a message on my Mac saying that somebody on my network was using my computer IP Adress. I deleted that installer but I feel scared for all the Mac users. Somebody please replie.

Clinton I'm sorry if you think this is Garbage but have you traveled out side the UK and seen what life is like and the scams they pull in the Phil's because Filipino's know every scam in the books and they would take the last Peso from there own Mother.

But my brother is a top computer programmer in the Military in the UK and he took the rest of the DVD's and each and every one had the same maleware program on them so pls dont call what ppl say Garbage till you know the truth your to fast to shoot your mouth off if you like one of the DVD's to see pls ask i will send you.

Confirming Clinton's outlook. You cannot make a DVD that is burnable with data already on it, thus a virus cannot exist on a blank, writable media unless it is rewitable, and even then, it's not blank.

Furthermore, typecasting an entire country of people is racist and highly offensive, especially coming from someone who obviously has no real knowledge of the workings of a computer and is going off second hand information from a company that bases thier business on false flagging blank DVDs.

If you got sold a dud DVD by a Filipino, that does not mean the "Filipino's know every scam in the books and they would take the last Peso from there own Mother." It means you were stupid enough to buy a blank DVD with no sealed packaging from an unreputable seller, something that is commonly availiable there just like it is in the UK. Not that I can see why a Filipino would profit from selling DVDs with Virii burned to them.

That's just as likely to happen in China, India, Brazil and poorer, dodgier parts of America and the UK. It's called profiting from a sucker.

I have used Intego for years and found it the best and as my older brother is a computer Programer and my father is EX RAF and was using emails in the first place before the normal ppl had even knowen about emails I think they know what they are doing and know if good or not I have lived in lots countries all over the world from UK middle east Asia Canada and the USA as my father and I am also ex Military.

I bourght the DVD's as Blank but as I put them in my Computer the software told me they already had mailware Virus on them and was trying to install on my computer so yes they was not blank to be right infact but I got them as Blank Disc.

I'm married to a Filipina so how can I be Racist as I also have a Daughter with my wife and she is the best thing in the world to me but she will be bought up in the UK not the Phil's.

I have lived in the philppines and I have open mind and its true that they would take the food from a babies mouth.

in the Philippines everything is sold open like DVD's even cigeretsare sold single as the stacks of 100 DVD's are sold open as you need to under stand that most Filipino are on less than $3 aday and stuff there cost more than in the UK.

till you have lived with them and seen how they are all the OFW works surport the family all just use the OFW for money and they dont care even if she sell her body for sex as long as they get money to live.

Go to the Middle East and see what and how Filipino are and how they scam each other to help family back home in the Phil's they are your best friends while they think you have money but soon as you tell them you dont then they will never see you again and never do business with one as you will never see your money again

So then let me get this straight, 'genieo support':

YOU work for GENIEO.

YOU wrote the following:

"If you do and you download it [GENIEO], than its your prerogative, please do not blame others for your actions (regardless of what the product does or does not do)... If you do not download it, no harm done."

Therefore regardless of the grammar used, YOU are implying "HARM" due to downloading GENIEO, the 'signature product' of the company YOU represent.

THAT, my friend, is a textbook 'disclaimer'/admission of intentionally distributing Malware.

I have been supporting Apple/MAC products and OS since 1985, and I'm not ashamed to say THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER HEARD A PRODUCT/COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE ADMIT TO WRITING/DISTRIBUTING MALWARE FOR MAC,

INTENTIONALLY.

If there were a wall, my friend, and a virtual firing squad were lined up anywhere near it - well, you would be standing right in front of that wall.

what I can't fathom is why a reseller (like INTEGO) wouldn't 'partner up' with some half-baked barely-legal software provider like Genieo,

IN ORDER TO SELL MORE ANTI-VIRUS PRODUCT.

If you're suggesting that anti-virus companies would team up with companies like Genieo to create malware that they can protect against, that's nonsense. There's no need for reputable companies (like Intego) to behave that way. There are plenty of real threats out there, and no need to manufacture them just to sell software.

Yeah! this piece of crap was downloaded, but it goes under some other name, I downloaded an app that was supposed to give me sports stats (it may come in different app names), when it did nothing I deleted it, as I never turn my macbook off, I did not notice the thing was in it, but immediately it was kicking off the wireless router and I had to go into the settings and reconnect again and again, then I decided to restart my mac, and put my password in and boom! there it was, it self installed and lodged itself as the default page on all the browsers, if I change the home page to google or bing, it will get me nowhere it prevents from contacting anything from outside of genieo, but search.genieo.com works.

Furthermore, I tried to get rid of it, and its nowhere to be found its hiden somewhere deep in the system, tried to delete all the cookies, and guess what, there is no cookies folder anymore, God knows what else is missing! tried to delete safari and it won't let me, it says its being used. Downloaded the genieo unistaller and you guessed it! it didn't work.

This thing is invasive and vicious! since its OSX I'm not too worried about damage to the software, but I'm afraid of someone grabbing my passwords stored on the mac. going to the Apple store today, to see if they can help!

I don't know about everyone else's experience with this genieo thing, but, as for myself it *****, I never intended download or to use Genieo in any way, and to top it off, it does not do what its supposed to, give a newspaper like search page, its just a search field on that page!

will report back after my visit to the apple store.

Good luck!

The Genieo uninstaller doesn't work. It leaves behind bits that are deceptively named, like a process called "Application" that remains running at all times even after uninstalling.

To remove this crap, you need to hunt down and destroy all the individual components manually. See the Genieo removal section of my Adware Removal Guide.

If you can recall exactly where you downloaded this from, that would be very helpful. I would like to have a sample to test. There have been many different variants of Genieo since this topic began, and behavior keeps changing. It would not only help me ensure that my guide still fits the version that you installed, but would also help others in the future suffering from problems getting rid of Genieo.

I got it from: firstrowus1.eu

I've seen this site in a previous occurrance.

Download is "SportsApp_Mac_Installer.zip" which contains the a fake installer package "SportsApp_Mac_Installer.app" which contains "InstallGenieo.app" which looks to be a standard signed Genio installer including "Application", etc. dated August of this year.

The SportsApp Installer also contains what looks to be adware extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari and a "users.js" file to change some user preferences in Firefox. These all appear to be associated with "gophoto-it.crx" whatever that might be.
