Mac mini 2012 (latest) slow wi-fi?!

Hi all,

Got my new Mac-mini 2012, been having major slow internet connectivity via wi-fi...

I've got my 2009 MBPro on wi-fi and do not have any internet connectivity slowdown issues like the mini.

Anny ideas please?

Thanks

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

I don't think that's been said definitively. Unfortunately, often the only way to solve these problems for yourself is to do some thorough testing of what works and what doesn't. If you think you're having problems with bluetooth interference, try switching to something else for awhile and see if things improve.

I was having the same issues with my Mac Mini (late 2012) on the 2.4GHz spectrum. I can't use 5GHz in my house because of where my wifi router is located, all devices don't pickup a good signal, but 2.4 they do (the router cannot be moved), so I need all devices on 2.4 in order to share/stream, etc. My Mac Mini picks up both spectrums strongly so I can test on the 5GHz band, and wifi was always fine.

My issue was being caused from an external USB 3.0 HDD that I have running next to my Mac Mini which was causing interference on 2.4GHz:

I turned it off, and my speeds instantly were restored to normal speeds (from 2Mbps to 15Mbps)

My resolution to this issue was switching the channel my router was on. I was only getting about 2mbps, and our internet we are paying for is 20mbps. I started going through each channel on the router. When I switched to channel 2 on the router @2.417 GHZ, that is what did it. I have run a few speed tests and am now averaging 20mbps. Finally!

For what it's worth, I've just started having this issue when I enabled the 5 Ghz band on my Extreme router.

I've had this Mac Mini for about two years and never had a problem with connectivity via wifi. Last week I enabled the 5 Ghz band on the Extreme and connected my Mini to the 5Ghz band. Then....I decided to switch back to the 2.4 Mhz band and the Mini would NOT allow me to switch over. It's kept staying on 5Ghz. Using another device I logged into the Extreme and switched OFF the 5Ghz band. I returned to the Mini and tried to connect to the 2.4. THAT was when I started to encounter problems with connecting and maintaining a connection to the router. If I was able to connect to the 2.4 band I had IP address issues and slow internet connections and stalling.

My guess is there is obviously a software issue when switching bands. I've tried all the recommendations others have tried to no avail.

Hi guys!

I had the same problem and what I did to solve it …

Youtube is faster now and Safari pages open. However, there is still something not running ok.

I did:

- update flashplayer

- changed the wifi-channel to number 5

- unticked the box in "bluetooth-assistent"

- shut off the external hard drive

- shut off the bluerayplayer standing next to the mac mini

These are all not my ideas, but I wanted them in one post :-)

Many years after most of these posts have been made, but here is my experience. I switched to Mac (everything), but still have my 6 year old PC. My router is Asus AC. Most of the time that my Mac Mini goes to sleep, it won't connect to wireless internet when awaken. I have to turn off wifi then turn it back on. Quite often I do a speed test (speedtest.net) and compare PC with Mac Mini. Mac Mini is ALWAYS slower and most of the time about 1/2 the speed of my old PC. I have done all the updates and am running Yosemite. I also had bought it with 4GB of Ram from the original 2 GB. Apple store told me when I bought this, that it would suit my general email and light duty office work just fine. I do not game. Why does it not seem to awaken the network connection and why is my download and upload speeds so slow. If I have a large file to download, I will go to my PC to retrieve. I have not totally transferred all my data to my Mac Mini, because of the slowness.
