Text messages different colors?

The text messages I send are different colors. Some of their background are blue and some are green. Why is that?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.1

Blue means the message was sent as an iMessage, using data, not your SMS allowance. Green means it was sent as a regular SMS. It also means that at the time you sent it, one or both of you didn't have a data connection.
