Can't send email?

Can't send email on my iMac Mountain Lion but can receive.

No problem with server, even changed port with no remedy.

Mac repair shop not open until Monday - this is Friday.

I think maybe if I delete my Mail s/w & re-load it it might work?

How to I get the mail s/w to replace it if I do? I was able to operate using the server's web mail.

Please advise!

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1), no other Mac products

By the way, update your system to 10.8.2.

From BudtheSpud

For future reference, the precise fix was in the Advanced settings in the Mail preferences & was missed many times due to one skipped step in the sequence.

When you select Mail, Preferences, Accounts - the account information was cross checked between me & the server. When we reviewed the outgoing mail server (SMTP) I verified it was my ISP. I was then asked to select "Advanced" which I did and we went down to the lower half of the window & changed the port to 110.

The problem was a step was omitted more than once, perhaps up to two or threee times maybe more!

Back up to the Mail, Preferences Account Information window - Now I should have been directed to select the outgoing server window and select "Edit SMTP server List" THEN select advanced and diddle with the port setting to 25 or whatever.

So that one omitted step resulted in missing the examination and changing of the SMTP setting. tzbikowski, who got the credit for the solution was the one who provided the vital clue for me to zero in on the error.

That was two ISP techs who missed the same crucial step - I am going to call my ISP & point out the omission so they can perhaps be more helpful & speedier in future similar cases.

Thanks again for a solution.

The only way I could get back into this blog was to reply to myself. I hope the others such as tzbikowski will get a notification as they were super helpful in the past.

Problem I described two years ago has returned. I still have my iMac but over a week ago I updated to OS X 10.10 Yosemite and am still using "Apple" Mail.

After quitting Mail or re-booting my iMac, I cannot send email, but can receive email but cannot see the list or contents or the received email!

I followed the corrective action that restored my Mail setting to get it operating normally.

Here is what I did: Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) > Edit SMTP server list... > Port 25 & removed check on SSL > OK > Advanced > Port 25 & untucked SSL > General > Save.

This enabled full & normal email service.

Once I leave Mail, those saved Preference setting change. I am getting into an endless loop. The SMTP server switches to Port 110 and the SSL gets reselected and the same is in the Advanced settings (Port 110 & SSL box ticked). It seems to be Mail Preference "go to setting" that I cannot control.

Is there any way to firmly establish my Mail Preference settings to restore normalcy?

I have been chasing this ghost for three days. Please assist.
