HD errors with secondary drive.

I have an issue on my secondary drive that has, up until this week, been working without any issues.

Here's my setup. I have a 2008 Macbook Pro with the latest mountain lion installed. I have removed my DVD drive and replaced it with an SSD drive where I"m running my machine from. I have a 1TB drive located in the normal HD slot where I run itunes, iphoto, dropbox and other programs that use large file sizes.

So this week I started getting "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when trying to do anything with the 1TB seconary drive. I couldn't do anything with it. If I didn't get that error then I'd get "The name 'filename' cannot be used Try using another name, with fewer characters or no punctuation marks.", when trying to rename a file.

I assumed it was my hard drive failing so I bought a different drive (the earlier drive was a Seagate so I bought a brand new Western Digigal) and restored the drive from a backup I had.

If I boot into the recovery partition and verify the drive using disk utitliy it will work for maybe an hour or so then it will give me the same erorr. Until I verify the drive again.

I've tried a number of things I've seen while searching this error. I've disabled "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" from energy saver, I've tried setting the drive to "ignore permissions" and yet it keeps happening.

I've had this setup for almost a year now and all has been fine until this past week. I've racked my brain to try and figure out what has changed this past week but I'm at a loss.

Any suggestions would be most helpful.

I'm running out of ideas, here. I'm thinking there may be some setting which could be corrected with Terminal command, but I don't know enough about that.

Where did you get the 1TB drive? If it was OWC, I have found them to be quite helpful.

Also, you might create new post here with a title of something like "I/O errors on 1TB drive in 2008 MacBook Pro" and see if you can catch the eye of one of the more experienced folks.
