I have Mountain Lion and an external HD via USB for Time Machine. I went to restore a folder that I had deleted and was given the message "you do not have permission to access..." I also noticed that my backup changed names (from HD TO HD(2)). Can anyone help me? All of my permissions are set to read & write. I cannot get the verify "disk permissions" on the external to highlight in disk utility.

Is TM on? Should be for this.
Is the external HD not mounted?
Is it connected directly to one of the Mac's USB ports or to a hub? (best if directly to Mac)
Do you see external HD name in Finder sidebar?
If not, launch Disk Utility and try to mount external HD from there.
drdocument. Why do people do a clean install? Because their iMac is taking too long to boot. Our computer is almost three years, and had already upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. It was starting to behave like a Windows machine: turn on, log on, go get a coffee and hope it's up and running when you return. Now it's good as new. The only hassle I had was recovering backups of my Documents which I solved in an hour. The others in my household recovered their files seamlessly, as I believe TM was designed to do. Regards.
TM is on. External HD is mounted and shows in finder. Connected via USB directly to iMac. 307GB free, 2 days' backup is all I can locate. The data is there, I just cannnot access it. Am I corrupted (again, twice in 4 months??).

I can see both sides.
Side A: Assuming drive and its directory are healthy, does clean install (aka "erase and install") do anything that cannot be accomplished by other means (such as with tools available in OnyX and other periodic maintenance)?
Side B: Assuming one has a good backup, since it is relatively simple to restore, can be faster and easier to simply erase and install followed by restore.

Does TM add to the new current backup?
Can you not see the previous backup(s) with Control-click on TM Dock icon and "Browse other...?"
I know you cannot repair permissions on Roger's Backup with Disk Utility, but you should be able to Verify, in DU, both the Roger's Backup device (non-indented) and the volume (indented). Have you done Verify on those two items?
Please post a screenshot of the Info window.
TM tries to do a FULL backup...but without enough space, so it quits. There are no other backups showing after "browse other...". My TM shows 2 days back...that's it.
I have verified on both internal and (TM) external.

Can you now see in Finder both backup directories on the external, old and newer?
If so, can you try solution suggested by j@nsen (earlier in this thread)?
Perhaps Linc Davis can help with ways to make all directories visible on external.
I have given up and formatted and started over. 2nd time in 4 months.

Some additional thoughts:
If you are using a USB drive for TM backup, be sure all goes well with formatting and check as deeply as you can for drive errors. Also, double-check for compatibility issues with particular drive manufacturer, as some write invisible partitions (I had a problem once with WD MyBook).
If you are planning on multiple user TM backups on the same drive, suggest you partition the drive so that each user's TM backup, and each different backup for same user if more than one, has its own partition. This does limit flexibility somewhat, and it requires designating a specific size partition for each, but is safer.
