DVD drive not working

My mid-2010 Mac Mini (sadly slightly out of warranty) has a DVD drive that doesn't seem to work anymore. It spins up just fine, and occasionally works, but with the majority of discs, I insert them, it spins up, spins down, spins up, tries several times, then ejects the disc as unreadable.

Any tips on what I can do to restore it to health?
